Turmeric not from India?
most likely whats in your grocery store isnt from India, that would be my first try....also most herb stores have a at least one turmeric product not form India. (Frontier Coop, Starwest Botanicals etc) just do some googling, there are plenty of non Indian organic fair trade sources out there

Sewing Skills
Hand sewn clothes aren't all that difficult either. Have made some of my most comfortable clothes (Renaissance Faire costumes) while camping out at the Faire site. Made an oversized muffin cap as well, that I can pull in whatever direction I want for shade - super easy and quick, and I love it.
