We're Getting Chicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a so excited to say that we are getting chicks! Yay! We're getting both meat and laying and I wanted to know if there was anything we should keep in mind. I have the brooders set up in a old shed that has the furnace that we use in the winter. In the summer we don't use it, so right now it is the perfect place since…

how long will a 50 lb. bag of feed last for a flock of 6 laying hens?
Can you help me with this math? Laying hens will need about 0.25# per day of approximately 16% protein feed, 6 hens would consume a total of 1.5 lb. per day. So (50 lb. / 1.5 lb.)/ day = 33.3. So 33 days? About a month? Does that seem right to you?

how much area do you estimate a free range flock of 6 hens would need not to overgraze the land?
We all know that you have to rotate livestock or they will eat everything that is good until it's gone, gone, gone. But I am wondering if there is a guestimate of a size yard that could support a flock of 6 hens such that the hens couldn't really damage the populations of the yummies? Is there such a size? I was…
