Egg carton use
Anybody out there have some DIY ideas for egg cartons? If you do let me know. This is mine. I have been using egg cartons to germinate and grow seedlings. Just top cartons with seed raising mix or equivalent, place seeds into mix, cover and keep watered. Once germination occurs and they've grown big enough to plant out,…

I have recently been looking into season extending methods and wondered if anyone here has any advice, tips, or methods that they successfully use to grow crops when the weather says you shouldn't be able to? My…

Seed Storage
I believe that it's very beneficial to save seed whenever possible or practicle. It not only saves money, but it also gives an extra level of insurance in relation to 'food security' and diversity. With the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in mind years ago I began to store all of my seed in the fridge. It can be a bit…

Nasturtiums
Hey friends, Wanted to share some research on nasturtiums. Amazing and beautiful plant allies! Here are just a few tidbits about them, with links at the bottom. I chose to follow links that would most likely have some research behind them. Garden nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus L.) Nasturtiums prevent cancer, cardiovascular…

Storing root crops
How does everyone store root crops for use throughout the winter? We are in zone five and grow potatoes, carrots, parsnips, beets, etc... I am looking for some natural storage suggestions, not canning or freezing, which is what we usually do. I would love to see pics of your setup if possible! Thanks :)

Liquid/Aquaponic Fertilizers
I'm gathering up all the supplies I need to grow some leafy greens and herbs in my super small-scale aquaponics-in-a-jar setup. Does anyone here have experience with liquid fertilizers/nutrients? I'm wondering what brands may be best to start out with? Especially with limited space and keeping weight in mind, I'd love to…

Adventures in High Performance Gardening 8 - The Invisible Marjory and how to garden and travel
LOL! Gosh, I go off on a short trip and leave Lynn to do the show without me... and look what happened! I get stuck with the weeding :( But I laughed out loud when I 'saw' myself as the Invisible Woman. Lynn does a good job showing what's sprouting. And Lynn tells you my secret of how I got the carrots to come up so thick…

Money Saving tips
I love gardening but it has been a somewhat expensive hobby so far. We’ve always had smaller gardens and grown some fresh veggies to supplement our food supply. We’ve now moved onto our “Agricultural Status” land. We’re required to make a profit to keep our tax status. The problem is, we spent all the money on building a…

Neighbors who use pesticides
I live in an suburban area with nearly a half of an acre. I believe in organic, pesticide free gardening. My concern is that my neighbor uses some kind of chemical treatment of their lawn. Introducing New Chickens
My roo died. It was a sad sad day, on the homestead, indeed. The loss was fully unexpected. He was young, handsome, and so very sweet. Lorax was a gentle giant, while he believed himself to be small. When I bought him, I knew very little about Sapphire Gems. Part of my lack of knowledge included how to properly identify a…

Broad leaf plantain
I am seeking information about broad leaf plantain, an edible (weed). I want to know if it's safe to eat the green seed spikes either in a salad or a smoothie? Do you strip them off the spike or just chop? How should I wash and with what to prevent contamination from animal excrement? Thanks!

Do you have an heirloom recipe handed down through the family?
As a small child, I was lucky enough to have a grandfather who took my brother and I out foraging (he didn't have a garden of his own.) We would come home with our "treasures" and then he would show us how to make up remedies in the kitchen. Most of what he learned was self taught from library books (no Pinterest back…
