Organic spray for fruit trees?
I seem to remember hearing several years ago about an organic spray for fruit trees. I think it might have been clay based, and it stuck to the fruit and kept the bugs out? Anyone happen to know what I'm taking about? If not, what do you recommend for keeping bugs outta ya pears?

So, have you met the rat-tailed maggot?
I made their acquaintance today. They are the larvae of the drone fly, Eristalis tenax. They have taken up residence in one of my compost tea buckets that I had ignored for around two weeks( I was on vacation last week and started working this week. The garden's been a bit neglected.) As far as I can tell from research,…

Sunflower Glory
I have tried 3 years in a row now to grow sunflowers, small, medium or large varieties, just for their beauty. Now yes, I am getting better at it but still not good enough. After all, I have seen pictures some people show of their sunflower fields and they are beautiful. Mine, they are nothing to brag about. So is there…

DIY Potato bug solution
EDIT: Video link no longer valid. Description of video: bug sweeper made with 4 brooms on a turning apparatus/bar that sweep the bugs off of the plants and into a waiting rectangular metal catch pan with sides. A man pushes the contraption (that is on wheels) forward to make the broom part turn in a sideways windmill…

How do I keep cats out of my garden
I am sure this topic has been around for a long time but I am an apartment gardener and since I already scraped out cat poop out I thought this might be a problem for me.

Bean leaf beetle
My very young bean plants have huge holes in the leaves(actually the cotyledons). I checked under all of them and found a small, longish red beetle, whom I assumed was a mexican bean beetle and swiftly dispatched. After I thought about it, I wasn't so sure, so I turned to my friend the internet. It was definitely not a…

Green Bean Problems
I live in south central Pennsylvania. I mention this because I generally try to order my seeds and supplies from growers which live in the same type of climate zone as my own. Now I have noticed a problem on my beans this year which I have never seen before. I have scoured thru about a dozen different books (most of them…

My zucchini is rotting before it’s ready to pick!
The blossom ends start to turn yellowish and gets soft. I looked up blossom end rot and it said that the new growth on the plant would be stunted and these plants look absolutely wonderful. I do have some large ant creatures that laid their eggs (apparently) on the underside of the leaves and pyganic runs them off pretty…

Help! Hit Fire Ants Nest with Lawn Mower
I ran the lawn mower over a Large fire ants nest this week, while fixing fence. Had it stuck for a while, but finally make it off with only a bent trailer tongue, but no bites! This thing is as big as the lawn mower. It's in the hay field and I put makers so we hopefully don't hit it again. I don't even want to think about…

Our Mimosa tree just up and died!
Last year was no different than the past 2 years. I saw nothing out of the ordinary, we didn't have a real cold winter, no severe drought, we did have more rain than usual last year but we didn't flood. There was a rock edged planting bed around it when we moved here. Last year I planted zinnias in it. This year I haven't…

Alternatives to Conventional Garden Chemicals?
Yes, I know they say Neem oil, Dr Earth and some Safer products are all approved for organic use. But my problem is I still lnow how to read and some of those ingredients I do not consider organic or safe (since I do have problems with chemical allergies). So I'm always experimenting with grocery type of products to mix…

Slugs And Their Eggs
I noticed something had been eating my newly planted veggies. I just knew they were slugs. So last night I put out 2 slug catchers. I filled 2 old planter saucers with just enough cheap beer to trap them. This morning I was shocked at the number I'd caught and how small they were. Just watched a video on what slug eggs…
