My New Year's Resolutions
I've been pretty successful making the same resolutions for the past few years. I make the same 2 every year: Read more books. Eat more ice cream. This year I'm adding more: Build at least 1 raised garden bed. Plant another fruit tree. Plant at least 3 new-to-me vegetables. Enjoy this PDF that I've created for New Years!

Don't Eat The Yellow Snow... it's a myth!
I grew up in Florida where "snow" is a concept on a Christmas card. And, before frost free refidgerators, sometimes what kind of looked like snow accumulated in the freezer. The biggest lesson I had been taught (in case I ever did get to see snow) was "don't eat the yellow snow" which made a ton of sense. Well, actually it…

Score at the library!
We have a shelf just inside the library door for books that have been donated. They only ask a donation, and I always have to look when I go in. Today I gave them a dollar for a paperback "Giant Book of Garden Solutions", by Jerry Baker! It claims to have 1,954 Natural Remedies to Handle Your Toughest Garden Problems!

How did we survive childhood?
I grow up eating/doing the things that they now say are bad for you. How come we all survived? If you believe what they say we all should be dead. As a kid, we used to throw ink berries at each other (we invented paint ball, just didn't know it). We eat elderberries right off the plants, seeds and all. Chokecerries, apple…

Ice Dams and Roof Care
I moved to Idaho in the spring of 2016 and was not prepared for the massive (and unusual for this area) snow load that we got in December. It continued into February, and I did wonder what I'd gotten myself into! For most of that winter the chain link fence around the yard was only visible because the corner and gate posts…

Water, water, water
I'd just like to mention water. Seeing we are experiencing drought/fires/high temps/wind in a large part of our country, just how important water is. I believe it's super important to plan for water storage, water availability when setting up, buying or refurbishing your house, farm, land etc. I live in what was once…

which is better, risk or predicatability?
Recently, I was reminded of a friend's father. Through his 20s, he enjoyed many things - music, kayaking, rebuilding British sports cars and racing them. In college, as he put it, "I learned everything to know about the human eye." He became an optometrist. Life, as he described it became predictable. The money was very…

"you life is a reflection of your thoughts"... Richdad.com
Your life is a reflection of your thoughts. We all know that thoughts are creative. If you want to control your thoughts… simply control what you say. Don’t say what you don’t want to think. Positive thoughts bring about positive results. Don’t say you can’t... because you can. My poor dad would always say, “I can’t afford…

My Christmas gift for y'all
I was very honored to know the Hicks family of Beech Creek, NC when I was younger. The Hicks were true Appalachian mountain people, true homesteaders going back many generations on the mountain. By the time I met them, Ray and Rosie were up in years and had only one son living at home. So, only perhaps 75% of the food they…
