The week in my garden
As some of you may be aware, I recently had shoulder surgery (now 8 weeks post op) So this week I felt better about doing a bit in the vegetable garden. I was missing my time in my space. I did heaps before the op but not a lot since. Boy, have I lost my strength and condition in such a short time! Not just my shoulder! I…

Debt and Thinking like a homesteader
Interesting article. Since my company changed me to bi-weekly paychecks, I've been rethinking my budgeting. Plus retirement and a desire to relocate are visible in the future.

Firewood Day
A few days ago, we had one and a half cords of sawed and split firewood delivered. We buy a load of green, unseasoned wood every spring, then let it season until the next winter. (Green wood is cheaper and more readily available than dry, seasoned wood.) So two days ago, my husband and I spent a large part of the day…

Anyone have experience with a community kitchen?
A really smart lady just pointed out, in another discussion, that a community kitchen might be just the way to justify the expense of a freeze dryer. With so many people working to become more self sufficient it sounds like a brilliant idea and I would love to know experiences with this type of arrangements.

Craft shows and homemade candles (humor)
My mother and I used to do a lot of craft shows for extra income. One year at a craft show near christmas I made candles that looked like fancy ice cream sundaes or sodas. They were really cute and a huge success at the show. I got all the old fashioned ice cream sundae glasses at an auction in a box lot. The candle…

Large overview of prepping for disasters, etc
While I would never say ultimate, this gives the varying levels of disasters and how he suggests prepping. He says quite as few things that @Marjory Wildcraft has already told us about. Okay, caveat about the comment section for this article. A number of them do not fit the spirit of this forum, please don't bring them…

Plant stress
I have noticed all kinds of plant stress working in greenhouse and doing landscaping. Even in your backyard understanding plant stress and know what to look for can help save a garden plant, shrub or tree. When a plant is more stressed it leads to insect issues and possible death.

Please help me convince my husband that we need a freeze dryer!
I am all about being able to preserve and provide for my family and others in need and I think a freeze dryer would be perfect for retired people to heat up and eat whatever each wants because we aren’t much for cooking every day. From what I understand, freeze drying keeps food almost exactly like fresh but that doesn’t…

Gone fishing - One of those Country adventures (humor)
It was one of those typical days in NW PA. Warm, sunny, semi peaceful and well: normal. My brothers one friend showed up and saw quite a bit of activity down by the creek. I was running off at full speed to the barn and came back dragging chains. Kevin got that look on his face and approached the creek edge cautiously. He…

April Snow brings May...I don't know
Just sitting here watching it snow, in southern Missouri, in April. Chickens are a little confused, dogs are having the time of their lives and I love the winter imagery overlaid and on a lush green spring with the dogwoods in bloom!

Spring weather
Well, it is sure shaping up to be an interesting spring so far. A week ago on Friday we were seeing lows of -10. Today, we hit 63. Snow is melting so fast it is almost unbelievable. Having to run a pump in our driveway daily as the lake we are getting from all the snow melting is coming up 3/4 of the height of a milk crate…

Whats your latest farm land adventure or activity?
You don't have to have a farm or land to post whats happening in your backyard, patio or land. Today I had to move perennials to be able to put a group of chickens out in a new penned area. I have my chickens penned I planned to move bit a few chickens free ranging while I was out. Of course these chickens had to help me…

Armadillo Mystery
First off, we shouldn't have armadillos this far north--west-central MO--but we do. They've been moving northward, slowly and steadily, for a couples decades; we've been seeing them occasionally in my neighborhood for about ten years or so. I've seen one on my land a couple times, and suspected it was living in the woods…

Total surprise natural, organic gift
I’m one lucky girl. I was totally surprised and delighted with an outstanding gift from my wife yesterday. I received a pack of 4 natural, unbleached layered, cotton vegetable “swags”. A cotton pouch with a fold over piece that stores your vegetables, fresh for 2 weeks. You dampen the swag and store your veg, spray with…

The ups and downs of life, Its ever changing
I have the last tweaks to put on the making cages post I am working on. I had it almost done and the computer threw a fit. I hear they are always better instructions the second time you do them. Note to self: there is a save draft button down below. I will not be online this week much and maybe next week. My brother passed…

Need opinions/suggestions
An item that I am considering buying is a used 20 foot weathertight Conex container. My rationale is that I can pull everything that I have in Commercial storage units and put it in the Conex. When I decide that it’s time to relocate, most of my stuff that I want to take will already be packed and ready to go. Saves money…

The unexpected love affair
As many of you know I have the one rescued rabbit. I was very hesitant to take it as I was not sure what was all wrong with it and if it could cause health issues with any of my other animals. But here she is and at this point living in the house. At first I had her in a small cage but she did much better with more…

Ah that mother of mine
She likes to keep me on my toes and not bored! ;) She had her 6 month check up today and we left early and planned to go to our discount store and take home dinner. She's moving much better than she was when it was winter and she never got out. The doctors building is partially shut down to to our strict covid regulations…

To mow or not to mow
That is the question How much do you mow? I have to mow my land down this year because it needs a good cleaning both in what is growing and just stuff. When the barn fell and things were being sorted things became very messy. It didn't help when easements came through and left half chopped bushes and trees. I have mixed…

AN incredible compliment
I got an incredible compliment today. I ran into a lady.... I see her maybe 3 times a year. She is 93 years old, a Master Gardener, and retired teacher. She is a fast talking, full of life, native Philadelphian, sharp mind and sharp tongue. I met her several years ago through her "boyfriend" who was an actual D Day…

I love this time of year - Discovery time
There seems to be a very small time span where I live where plants just begin to sprout and suddenly they are buried alive with grass and other growth. Yesterday and today I see all kinds of plants coming up I thought I had lost or the marker broke. I have a lovely Queen of the Prairie plants that the ground hog and…
