My garlic is coming up!
I have not known anything about growing garlic. But I followed the instructions and planted garlic last October, hoping it would survive. It did not show shoots above ground before the cold weather hit. Then our actual temps got down to -31 degrees a couple of weeks ago, and I doubted the garlic would survive. But as soon…

Johnny Seeds suspends orders from home gardeners again
Johnny's Seeds has once again suspended accepting new orders from home gardeners, focusing on farmers. I am very sad to hear this, as they have been one of my preferred seed suppliers. While I am sympathetic to the struggles of trying to fill high seed demand from home gardeners, I have much less sympathy than I did a year…

Shady Veggies
I have a stone wall that gets some strong sun for a few hours a day. So far I've tried beans, corn, tomatoes, and various flowers, none of which were really successful. The best so far has been aloe and roses. I'd really like to grow some veggies in that spot. Any ideas? There's a bed about 2 feet wide in front of it.

Follow me through my veg gardening year
Today was a warm and sunny day and I started my veg growing for this year. It's going to be kohlrabi, cauliflower, fenel, chervil, different salad greens, spinach, radish, spring onions and some calendula. The racks will sit on a window sill until they germinate and then go under grow light at a slightly cooler temp to get…

Procrastination anyone?
Help! I have all my seeds sitting on a shelf waiting to be planted. I enjoy gardening, but I just can't seem to motivate myself to plant anything. Usually I have my seeds in seed trays by February 1st and am growing my seedlings already. The days have been so gray and I have been working long hours, by the time I get home,…

Basket and hay bale gardening advice needed.
Last year we put up a greenhouse and it has been wonderful this winter! Because we built raised beds in there and none outside I’m thinking that I need to grow smarter this year. The heat is going to require outside beds but I don’t have any yet. Unfortunately, I also have very acidic, clay soil here in Alabama so I’m…

Experiments with onions
After growing bulbing onions for several years and being very dissatisfied with the size of the bulbs and the yield, last year I decided to try different types of onions to find something that would be easier and more productive to grow here. So far I have been grown: Walking onions Potato onions & shallots Syboe onions…

Free seed project
I have participated in this for several years. If this topic is not ok, please remove. I grow food for the community and food pantries. I also teach classes and help new gardeners set up a garden for easy gardening, less weeding in smaller spaces. I have also helped people get gardens in towns where sometimes they have…

Growing Celery
Who grows celery here? Since it's very cold day here and I have seeds that require more time I am starting many of those today. One seed that seems to take a lot of time to sprout and get to a good size in my climate is celery. Has anyone grown it here? I want to grow normal celery and a red celery (yes, back to color…

Zucchini horror stories
I was watching Lynn and Marjories garden series @Marjory Wildcraft put up for us to watch today. They were talking about the importance of garden planning and what to plant and "squash " came up. I had to laugh. I think we all have that overabundance of squash, particularly zucchini we do not know what to do with. I had a…

When to Harvest Ginger?
I'd like to try growing grocery-store ginger in containers here in SW Colorado (zone 6a). I know I need to bring it in over the winter, but I am finding conflicting information online about when to actually harvest it -- I'm seeing people say 8-10 months; when the leaves start to yellow; or after 3-4 months. Can anyone…

different vegetables
I am going through my vegetables seeds and sorting them as when to start them and how. One day I'll do this in the fall but I have to admit it makes a great relaxing evening. So as I am doing this I find my unique seed varieties and think I will post some - just because. I hope if you have different seeds and crops in…

Dried seed pods and cutting gardens
I have a small cutting garden that I use mainly for family and myself but I may enlarge it. I have had more calls for bouquets but its like everything else. Do I have time and what all will it benefit? Bouquets bring in people and sales at a farmers market. Everyone wants to look at the pretty colors and ask questions. And…
