Elderflower sirup
I have just finished making elderflower sirup. I hope it will last until next elderflower season. I collected 20-30 elderflowers. They should be very fresh and very fragrant. I spread them on a sheet outside, so that all insects can escape, then checked each and every. I never wash elderflower as they loose so much if…

Todays wildcrafting harvest: a whole lot of Mimosa!
I spent about an hour this afternoon "volunteering to help prune some trees" at a 300 year old cemetery in central NC... it was 90 degrees, but I enjoyed it. There were even some ripe blackberries growing nearby. Mimosa flowers, leaves, stems and bark are very useful herbally - they reduce mast cells, which helps with…

Found a squirrel's Hazelnut stash; is it edible?
While weeding my asparagus garden I found a stash of hazelnuts and then noticed many more lying around. Are they edible? They were, obviously, frozen for many months (we're in Ontario).

So-so blackberries?
I was so excited to find loads and loads of little blackberries. This is earlier in the season than I’m used to finding them, but I’m in a new area so that isn’t surprising. I picked at least a quart this morning, but they are tart at best, and at worst a little flavorless with almost a bitter aftertaste. I’m wondering if…

Spruce buds
Just came in from picking a nice bunch of beautiful spruce buds. My intent was just to dry them for later. Got me thinking that this group likely has lots of awesome ideas. I hear they are loaded with vitamin C. I added them fresh into a handful of nuts and dried fruits I happened to have with me for snack. My tastebuds…
