Ever had socca?
I tried it for the first time today. It's an easy and delicious chickpea flour flatbread- gluten-free and vegan. This is the recipe I followed, with a couple of changes I made my batter the night before, adding some dried rosemary and pepper. I put the batter in the fridge, but I took it out an hour before baking. Based on…

A child with asthma & eczema
@torey I have a young relative, 6 yrs old, that struggles with these two things. For the eczema, I suggested an infused oil/salve of chickweed, plantain, comfrey & horsetail (and possibly jewelweed) for topical use. I know that you suggested Oregon grape root in the past for liver function. What form would this be in & (if…

I am looking for ideas in making Granola with or without oats. I need to eat more fiber and oats doesn't really like me. Does anyone have suggestions of other things I could use besides oats for the fiber?

What Holiday Foods and Traditions Do You Celebrate?
My family tree has roots in both Germany, Czechoslovakia and Scotland. I love any and all of the traditional ethnic foods from those countries that we have made down through the years. Meats and soups, candies and pastries, etc. Christmas Goose with Stuffing, Kolaches, especially Poppy Seed, Stollen...too many things to…

Banana Butter Pecan almost non-dairy ice cream
I apologize for the cumbersome title. I am sensitive to dairy, so I have been making coconut milk ice creams for a few years now, with varying success. I made this a few weeks ago, and I thought it was my best ice cream ever. The texture was quite nice, and the flavor was a mellow banana/vanilla flavor with a hint of…

Cookbooks
I collect cookbooks, the older the better. It intrigues me how food trends change. Even the use of certain products change...Oleo for example. Does Oleo still exist? Some books include stories to accompany the recipe. Some include a little history of the person submitting the recipe. Does anyone else collect cookbooks?

my family barbecue recipe... around 400 years old... eastern NC
Folks seemed to like my chili recipe, so I thought I'd offer up some info on how we do barbecue in my family. My folks came to NC/VA/SC via the islands (where they learned the technique) close to 400 years ago. This is very traditional (mostly pork) barbecue, that uses no expensive equipment - no smokers, just a pit (a…

Mustard, senf... mmmm
Ok, I'm having a mustard craving. There are a couple commercial products out there that I love, and making it myself is fine, but what I seek from You All Marvelous People are... recipes. Snacks, dips, sauces, marinades... featuring mustard. I'm a polish or german mustard kinda person, if that matters, but here I am...…

Going to try Patty Pan Squash soup this weekend
I have a bunch of patty pan squash in the freezer. Since I need to use it, I went looking for a recipe. I roasted it before I froze it, so that might take a little time off cooking. Will let you know Dad's opinion is on this one; since the eggplant didn't go over very well. Here's the link:

Barbecue Hash and Brunswick Stew
I guess I forgot to mention the great barbecue "byproducts" that result from cooking real barbecue - hash and Brunswick Stew. Well, Brunswick stew is probably the older dish. Amateur food historians have debated for decades of over the origin of Brunswick Stew. It was said to have been born in Brunswick, GA around the time…

Fun Southern Cooking Cookbook
This is my .25 cent score from the library book sale today. It's a newer cookbook (2007), runs 400 pages without photos, and had delightful little side notes about the history, the recipes, and the people in Southern cooking. Just this morning I've learned about the history of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and RC Cola and Moon Pies!

How many cucumber salads can you make...
Cucumbers are one of my favorite things. Pickles, too. I like to make crunchy salads that I can then put inside Vietnamese Summer Rolls, or sushi; I also like to make less crunchy salads. Hortikia is one of my favorite salads, which relies on cucumber. If I'm making hortikia, and there are extra cukes, making up some…

Winter Squash Loves - the Not Zucchini Show
Someone posted a thread on zucchini and the myriads of recipes to make marvelous tasting zucchini dishes. Sadly, I hate zucchini, in spite of the many ways to prepare it, many of which are delicious (in spite of the fact that it has zucchini in it). Now pumpkins - there are so many varieties of winter squash, pumpkins,…

Garlic in Avocado Oil
Hi All - I had an abundance of garlic this year and put a bunch of rinsed & dried off, peeled cloves in avocado oil to store in the refrigerator for future use. I've done this in the past in a large quart jar with plenty of head room, but the jar I'm asking about today was a used, washed/cleaned pickled carrot jar. Anyway,…

New Cocktail Recipes - Variations on Old Favs and some Unique Ingredients
Following is a link to Edible (in my case Edible Vancouver) Magazine's page of new cocktail recipes. Some are very different.Like the Smoky Beet Shrub. Who would have thought! I think it would go nicely with any type of liquor besides the recommended gin. Or just nice as a Mocktail. I think the Quince Liqueur recipe could…

Share your hot sauce recipes!
Pretty please! My hot peppers are coming on full force; some will be pickled and a lot will be roasted and frozen for later, but I'd like to turn some into hot sauce.I don't have a go to hot sauce recipe, though I've made a few concoctions I like. Often I'll puree my peppers after I've lacto-fermented or roasted. Here's a…

Limoncello or not!
So roughly 3 yrs ago and an excessive amount of fresh lemons, I decided to make some homemade Limoncello. Lots of lemon peel soaked in vodka, roughly 6 weeks and then make sugar syrup and sweeten to taste. Made up a few gift bottles for Xmas that year and they went down a treat. Last weekend while I was having a clean-up…

Shrimp and chicken jambalaya....best $3 pot of food I've made in a long time!
Actually, this is one of the best meals I've ever had! Well, y'all know I'm part Creole French... so I made this without a recipe, mostly from leftovers, just based on the flavors I know and love. A few days ago, I poached some croakers (small salt water drum.. but most any fish would do) to make fish cakes. Croaker are…
