Evening Planting
I have been doing more gardening in the evening and night. I have been finding that my plants like having the night to get acclimated before the 9A sun hits the next day. I have also been trying to get seeds in the ground in a light rain. They seem to germinate well this way. Has anyone else experimented with times to…

GMO vs. Hybrid
I was not sure where to put this discussion so I put it under growing methods since it directly affects what we eat. I have a gardening blog on Facebook which is mostly about what I am doing in my garden but right now I am not doing much so I have been posting things about what has been going on and this is going to be…

What to use at the bottom of a Smartpots Urban Raised bed?
Other than sticks. will leaves and card board work for a SmartPots Urban Raised bed? It's a 4x4 Fabric container stood up with PVC for stability. I heard sticks are good, but since it has a bottom, I'm wondering if cardboard and leaves can be used as well. Thank you.

An impressive short video on permaculture
I found this lovely permaculture video about planning a space and utilising the space you have, from a couple that are highly revered in Australia. Su Dennet & David Holmgren give great tips and have a really calming, joyful way about them. Found myself smiling and inspired by watching this. Hope you enjoy, like I did.

Make your own plant growing gel
I never thought of a plant growing gel, It keeps seeds that really need a mosit soil moist until they sprout. Great for arid and windy ideas. I guess carrots really benefit from this. I will try it this spring I also make my own seed tapes with toilet paper and glue.

Propagating roses from cuttings
I am trying to clone my favourite roses. I do not even know the name of the roses as they were here when we bought the house and the garden. The scent and the colour are my favourite and I collect these petals for my herbal tea mixtures. My herbal grind has been asking for years whether she could have a rose like this. And…

The problem is the solution - Permaculture
In permaculture you often hear the saying, "The problem is the solution." I look at issues on the property in that regard. This is my problem, how do I use it to fix it to be the solution? My house sits too close to the road. With 17 acres, give or take, it would be nice if the house was located in the side field or…

Great Intro Article
This article just showed up on my email. Folks in this TGN community probably know all these techniques and do all or most of them already. But the article is so well done that I thought it would be handy to have it to forward on to friends who are new to gardening. I do have mixed feelings about it being a plug for…

Sterilizing containers for seedlings
I just downloaded a booklet about tomatoes and it suggests using a bleach solution to clean seed trays. I don't really use bleach and have no idea where I would dump the used bleached water. What are some alternatives to cleaning trays and pots?

Growing a Tropical Garden - David the Good and I have fun discussing growing in the tropics
Hey this is a fun spontaneous video I just did with David the Good. I was looking for tips for growing food in the tropics. It's always a good idea to connect with experienced gardeners when moving to a new region. Not totally sure I like that "bearded red neck" look David is sporting these days - what do you think? LOL

Beginning a New Garden
I'm starting a new garden with only the compost I can buy and I'm on a budget. Would it be best to do soil tests, till in amendments, and plant directly into the ground, or better to buy compost and plant directly into the compost? I usually build raised beds and fill them with homemade compost, but I'm in a new place and…

Repurposing the flatware for purposes of extracting some prize-winning scallion
This old feral picnic knife became just the thing to dig delicately, yet assertively and efficiently around some scallion that has been super easy to grow--and what even grew especially well in slightly clay-ier soil. The scallion appears to spread similar to chives so I didn't even plant any this year and still am…

Controlling insects in a greenhouse
How do you control insects in a greenhouse? We had a major issue, particularly with white flies in a greenhouse I voulunteered in. Their solution was a ton of chemicals. Pre-seeding seeds
I have been following a flower gardeing business that either preseeds their flower seeds in the fall or very early spring. New to me--Phenology
Just what we all need--another garden project!
