Botanical Ice Lanterns
I have no idea if this link will work. It is off Instagram. It was posted by ueno_farm https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2XEtEISPgD/?igsh=MTR4cnFyemRhNWM0bA== Essentially, you put some water in round balloons, swirl the water around so it covers all parts inside and hang it from something to freeze a bit. The creators of the…

A Late Start to the 2024 Garden
After two trips out of state, I am getting a late start to getting this year's garden going. The peppers really should have been started a week or two ago, but I've only just put them in wet soil and given them some warmth. If they are a little late, well, I can live with that. On the other hand, I learned last year that…

Is anyone up for a rebus challenge?
I was wondering if anyone wants to play a bit of a game before everything gets really busy with spring prep. I propose that we try to create a discussion below trying our best in our posts to use emojis as much as possible, kind of like substituting words with a rebus. I'm not sure what the topic should be. This can start…

What is your first memory in a garden?
My first is hard to determine, but I was always impressed with my grandfather's garden. He had a large one (and some years, two or three) that flooded every spring. It grew the biggest & best of everything tasty! His rescue crabapple apple tree was classic. It was always there in my memory, & always had lots of tasty…

Crazy weather
After a cold and snowy early winter, we had a sudden warming that brought about 3 inches of rain at the same time that the existing snow started melting rapidly. For the second time this year, we are seeing rivers overflow their banks, and water flowing across roads making driving hazardous. If these kind of swings in…

*NEW* Community Project Ideas Action Group
Ideas welcomed! Let's brainstorm. I wondered if any members might be interested in working together in some way to do a volunteer grassroots community project? I would like a gathering for this purpose to be a place where talents can be used and exciting goals realized. At this point, gathering ideas are where I want to…

heirloom popcorn
I love popcorn but sadly am sensitive to corn so have to avoid it. I read that sorghum is a good alternative and in online reviews people raved about how they couldn't eat regular popcorn and tried sorghum and are really happy with it. I was hopeful and tried but it pops so tiny and only about 50% of the grains pop. It…

Lessons I learned about my garden in 2023
Lessons I learned about my garden in 2023 That an insect really like my Italian and Greek Oregano but the Hot & Spicy Oregano not so much! My Daffodils which were here when I moved, have been able to survive being covered up with other plants and gophers. The storms that blew through in 2023 all had high winds associated…

Old Fashioned Ways to Stay Warm(er)
I'm lucky that my area (West Plains, MO) is not having the worst weather this week, but it is still cold this morning. Zero degrees with a minus 19 wind chill! We are not in danger of losing power, so far as I know, and I have the heat up to 70. But this apartment has NO insulation, and the floor is cold! I've had the…

Merry Christmas from Down Under
Some may have noticed I haven’t been that active on the forums for a while. I have stepped down as a moderator, as I couldn’t fulfill my obligations. I have become so busy with my community over the last year, that something had to give & unfortunately it was my involvement with TGN forums. This year, my local village &…

Life lessons
I have come to realize that there is only one thing I truly understand in life and that is fishing...and fishing usually isn't catching. No matter how much you know, it usually doesn't work out. But, I would still rather be fishing than most anything else.

Sharing a favorite ad from years past
This is an old ad for (at the time before it got sold) a Canadian beer, Molson Canadian. Their slogan, being a Canadian beer was, "I AM CANADIAN!" and played on what sets Canadians apart & stereotypes, which was really smart marketing. And as you most likely all know, Canadians are proud of their beer. This ad in…

She…

An unexpected gift
I'm fairly stoic, but Friday I found a box of tools that had been stored for decades. My grandfather set them aside for me 40 years ago. They belonged to my great grandfather. They fit my hands. This is an incredible Christmas gift, and very emotional!

What I love most about being a Craftsman around the holidays
I love it when someone commissions me to make a gift for their loved ones. It is not merely a sign that they like my wood carvings and baskets, but it is a greater sign of value in that they want to give someone special something special. And, it is a sign of trust. I’m always grateful when people buy my work, but it is…

Heads Up - Delay in Electronic Payments to IRS
I received form CP14 saying that my dad owes $417.00 and it is due by August 28th. But that amount was pulled by the IRS from his/my account on 04/14/23. So, I called the IRS and actually got through right away! Turns out that some of the electronic payments made in April, May and June are in a “delayed status”, the Agent…

Night sky without satellites and planes
I thought it does not exist. A night sky full of starts, but no visible satellites and blinking planes. We are on a small Canary island in the Atlantic. On a farmstead away from any bigger town or even village. There is no light pollution. I love looking at the stars. And, to my great surprise, I did not see any moving…

I'm Going to Be Checking In Sporadically For a While
Moms had 2 minor strokes in the past 3 weeks, and my sister needs help with her while we decide if we can continue to keep her home or if we need to get her into a rehab facility. She walks with a walker or quad cane pretty well but is weak. She eats some, but not enough and cannot even heat things up for herself. Her…

Community Challenge Ideas
I'm hyper-focused this evening. 😆 I've been thinking of challenges that our community can plan to hold to help build up our community! Perhaps each year we could pick a different theme. It could be quite fun & hopefully it could be a manageable project for each member who wants to take on the challenge. I could be anything…

A unique bowl: Do you see what I see?
I went to a second craft sale yesterday. This bowl caught my eye from a distance. They displayed it upright specifically because of a comment a passerby had said. I was going to think for a while on getting it and maybe come back to it later. But, I decided within a couple minutes of leaving the table, that I couldn't just…
