Chance of frost tonight
Our temperature will be going down to 4°C tonight, so possibly our first frost of the season. We've been busy getting freezers ready lately, and today we've been getting herbs cleaned & hanging. I've also been assessing the rest of the garden. We'll be bringing out the sheets, etc., to cover what we can. Of course, what we…

Insane Weather!
Wow, it is almost April and we got a severe thunderstorm warning around 10 am and now we just got a tornado warning for central San Diego! That is crazy! While I was typing this another severe thunderstorm warning came over for Coranado and downtown San Diego! Is anyone seeing unusual weather this year?

Giant pumpkin weigh off happens today
Can't wait to see how big the winners are this year at our state fair. They will be holding the weigh off today so results should be available soon. If anyone else is interested, I will post links and/or information here as soon as I am able to get them. Last year an Anchorage farmer set a record for the largest pumpkin in…

I'm Going to Be Checking In Sporadically For a While
Moms had 2 minor strokes in the past 3 weeks, and my sister needs help with her while we decide if we can continue to keep her home or if we need to get her into a rehab facility. She walks with a walker or quad cane pretty well but is weak. She eats some, but not enough and cannot even heat things up for herself. Her…

I was just shown this by one of our kids today. What a great idea if you don't have a wide closet.

May 24th: I've signed up for a Jiu Jitsu competetion - update! I TOOK SILVER can't believe it
Inspiried by @Ruth Ann Reyes who competes in pool tournaments... I'm not sure of my sanity at this point but I signed up for a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) competetion to be held this Sunday. So far it does not look like I have a 'match' or basically someone to roll with. But last minute sign ups are a thing. And just for the…

Safari in Tanzania
Back in August, I had a chance to tick of a bucket list item & travel to Africa. Tanzania more specifically & what a jaw dropping experience. It was so special to see animals in the wild, in their natural habitat & we were in the “zoo” so to speak. To see the landscapes & places I’d heard & dreamed about was so exciting,…

Heads Up - Delay in Electronic Payments to IRS
I received form CP14 saying that my dad owes $417.00 and it is due by August 28th. But that amount was pulled by the IRS from his/my account on 04/14/23. So, I called the IRS and actually got through right away! Turns out that some of the electronic payments made in April, May and June are in a “delayed status”, the Agent…

It's been awhile...
I'm so sorry I disappeared, who knew setting up a Homestead from scratch would be so time consuming? LOL! We moved here three years ago, and the only plant growing was hostas. Fast forward to today and we have a 90 by 110 foot vegetable garden going strong, 14 apple trees, 2 of them with apples on them, lilacs, peonies,…

Everything is late this year
My garden is late this year because of the weather in late winter and early spring. That effect is rippling through my whole summer. Because winter last several weeks longer than usual, last frost was about a week later than I have seen in the past decade, and early spring weather stayed very cool, I had to plant some…

Another Rant - Medical Billing
This rant is the other side of my medical care rant that I started back in July. The hospital that my dad was in and out of uses a Billing Company that in my opinion has practices that are borderline fraud. First the sent my dad a bill for the whole amount for the services administered in July with a Now Due date but if…

Debt and Thinking like a homesteader
Interesting article. Since my company changed me to bi-weekly paychecks, I've been rethinking my budgeting. Plus retirement and a desire to relocate are visible in the future.

For those who wonder why they call Alaska..."Land of the Midnight Sun"
This photo was taken in a town a few hours north of us but is similar to what it's like here where I live. This photo was taken at midnight on June 14th.

Ah. the South
Ah the South… I awoke today to find a quart jar of peach brandy on my doorstep, a gift from a neighbor… and a not saying his tomatoes would be ripe soon and to come pick all I want. I’ll take him a wooden spoon I carved.

A strange & intriguing ad... any ideas about purpose?
I just saw this local ad: "Looking for common garden weeds" which was followed by this: "Need to collect a couple of kilos of chemical free pursulane (Portulaca), Amaranth, and Chenopodium (goosefoot)." I think it would be a bit rude to ask them why they want these and so much of each. Does anyone want to venture a guess…

Collecting ideas & suggestions: What can I do to help improve the forum?
I would like to know what in our community forum space could possibly be improved. I have been doing a lot of work on this, and have found some great ideas, but know I could potentially do more. Is there something that you think could make it easier to navigate our forum? Do you understand how features work? Have I covered…

Lessons I have learned in Retirement & COVID
I retired on June 24th not sure how it would go, I quit a job in February 2019 and then was asked by a boss from a previous job to come work at his new company which I did in February 2020. In June of 2020 I was laid off and then brought back in February 2021. Yes a February and June seemed to be busy months for me 😊 When…

What is your favorite tree?
My favorite prairie tree is the huge & majestic cottonwood. If I lived closer to the West Coast, it might be the Douglas fir, but the cedar might come in close. If I was overseas, I think the baobab would top them all. To be fair to the rest, I love all sorts of trees. They all have their place and are beautiful to me.

Harbringers of Spring
I have no faith at all in any of the gopher's, groundhog's or even the rare Vancouver Island Marmot's predictions of spring. Ian Tyson sings of the signs of spring in northern Alberta in his song "Springtime". The first few lines set the tone. "Bald eagles back in the cottonwood tree The old brown hills are just about bare…

What the best tip you’ve learnt from TGN
I’m interested to know what others have learnt from being involved with the TGN forums? What’s your number one thing that made you go yes, yes, yes, I will keep doing that because it works. Mine is being able to turn my herbs into medicine & using that homemade end product into a useful action. So much so that I’m…

Organizing a pantry - Help
My grandfather stored pantry food in a special mouse proof room in the barn and left the light on in the winter to keep it just warm enough that nothing would freeze. He would go out twice a week and bring over what was needed. But alas, the barn fell in a few years back. (we live in his old farm house now) I was going to…

Firewood Day
A few days ago, we had one and a half cords of sawed and split firewood delivered. We buy a load of green, unseasoned wood every spring, then let it season until the next winter. (Green wood is cheaper and more readily available than dry, seasoned wood.) So two days ago, my husband and I spent a large part of the day…

Spring Garden 2023
It's that time of the year in New England. The ground has finally thawed, the snow has melted, and the rains have begun. I spent some time this weekend working the soil in the raised bed, turning it over, digging out grass and dandelion weeds, and planting the cool-weather crops. The first wave of lettuce, mustard, and…

Possible Homesteading Opportunity??
This homesteading group is absolutely amazing. I can’t thank everyone enough here, but @Marjory Wildcraft , @Torey , @LaurieLovesLearning , just to name a few, have been real game changers for me. I have been involved a bit in communities here in the States and a little in Greece, and I have been trying to figure a way to…

"Never Alone: A Solo Arctic Journey" a new book by Woniya
If you have followed TGN a while then you've heard of Woniya. She is the incredable woman who taught us all how to make buckskin clothing and how to live without refrdigeration. I've lost touch with Woniya over the years and I had no idea she was on an episode of "Alone". But I just heard about here new book and I am so…

Less for our money
Have you noticed we are getting less for our money. Do the manufacturers think we won't notice? An 8 pack of toilet paper for the regular price of $ 5.98! The graham crackers are more of course but the product is less with more at the end of the wrapper! They need new wrappers!!
