What is your favorite summer homesteading footwear?
I am looking to buy some new summer homesteading footwear. I like the "croc like" shoes I have because they are light and airy, but they are not tough enough. I have had sharp bushes almost puncture holes in the bottom. Also, they become extremely slippery on the inside in the mud. What is your favorite summer footwear…

How is your garden doing this year?
The weather has finally gotten warm enough that the small garden I have is starting to grow. Do you have pests or larger animals how have you kept them out of the garden? Are you using any herbs or spices to keep the bugs at bay? Have you harvested anything already? Vegetables, herbs, fruits?

New Member
Just wanted to introduce myself. I just joined and am already happy I did! There appears to be some great discussions. A little background on me. I am a certified holistic nutritionist and I believe the best health can be achieved through growing our own food. I've been organic gardening for a very long time but in the…

Cold Start to the Summer
It’s the second week of June and I haven’t seen temps above 60 yet. My radishes aren’t even ready when I normally have those just before Memorial Day. My peas have flowers but no fruit and my beans are a measly 4” tall. If this keeps up I’m going seed out broccoli and cauliflower because why bother with peppers at this…

Lint on hung dry clothes
Ok this is something that had plagued me forever and I just cannot figure out what to do about it. *How* do you keep your clothes lint free if you hang dry them? I prefer to dry my clothes outside and I cannot stop them from being lint covered out of the washer

Into The Wild the story of Christopher McCandless
I often find my thoughts drifting to the story "Into the Wild". Sometimes triggered by a news story of some hapless person following in his footsteps in Alaska, or maybe a dry riverbed in the desert. The story is so poignant and honest, based on his personal writings and even a camcorder. Imagine what could have been if he…

Greetings! New member here! 💚
Hi folks! Greetings from not-so-sunny Seattle, my name is Mikaela, and I am a fairly new member (and even newer member of the TGN street team). I have a huge love of growing veggies and herbs, however I moved back here from Florida so I'm having to 're-learn' how to grow some of my plants (and due to living in an apartment…

A gem of a find!
Had a great day yesterday, awesome winter weather at the start of the long weekend. Decided to do a few garage sales in the area. Found a couple of bargains, including a really old piping set. Now I realise I can cut the corner of a plastic bag but these beauties I couldn't let pass.

Warning... sensitive topic
Okay... so... 95% of people I've tried to discuss this with won't discuss it at all and get mad. Recently, a county animal agent asked if I could take some horses. I can't right now. I'd be glad to have some just for aesthetics and manure soon.... have in the past... I love horses as pets... but I can't right now. She told…

How do you feel in your food garden?
At the moment I am feeling very in tune with my vegie garden space. I usually get out there early morning, sometimes I listen to the radio, sometimes not, just the birds and my trusty dog by my side. I feel extremely grateful to have this "me" time. I scratch around like an old chook, weed, water, mulch and work out what…

City Clothesline
Hey everyone! We put in a clothesline this year and I am loving how our clothes smell, not to mention how we are saving on our utility costs! We made it without any kind of metal fasteners, which will make replacement or repair easy in the future, hopefully. The kids are even coming around to enjoying hanging clothes. Are…

Gee my natural witchcraftery does work!
Over the years, my wife has put up with a lot of health/diet changes on my quest to keep us healthy. Here drink this, here take that pill etc. Now I've finally settled on the "simple" approach, keeping it natural, growing most of our food supply, she lovingly teases me about what I'm up to, "eye of newt" as she passes the…

Cutest Little Fawn I've Ever Seen
Now I live in an area where the white-tailed deer is abundant. For here, daily sightings is just the norm. But today I got to see a new fawn, the smallest I have ever seen, so me being an animal lover means it was instant love at first sight. This little one was so frisky and feisty, playing all by herself/himself. (I…

I was just given a treasure chest of valuable information!
The president of our organic gardening club is moving out of the area. The club has been around since 1955 and has an extensive library of magazines and articles going back over half a century. As secretary of the club, I have been given custody of this treasure trove. It really is just that because there are many articles…

First Greenhouse
Yay! I finally got my first greenhouse. Will soon have it overrun with plants but my starts are doing better than they have ever done.Transplanting tomatoes before work this morning. There will probably be plenty to share this year. Never had this many seeds actually grow into good, healthy plants.

Yeah, so I posted this on a local forum today
I will be making some people upset there. Ah... There was a vegan pushing an agenda to a largely agricultural (grain & livestock) audience today. The main subjects talked about so far on the thread were factory farms & population control. Of course, the last one gets me going as I believe large families (especially rural…

Headed south in 2 weeks
So, it's getting real. I will sign a 3 month lease on an apartment in West Plains, Missouri tomorrow and pay the deposit, the pet deposit, and a prorated month of rent. My sister will fly out on June 5th, and we will load up a 26 foot U-haul truck (she's driven one before), and head for Missouri by way of Utah, Wyoming,…

A successful but stressful weekend
Wow, what a busy weekend. Saturday I got to spend most of the day outside. I harvested the last of the radishes, the spinach seed, and a couple onions from the hoop house. The calendula I had started in one aerogarden went out to the perennial bed on the east side of the house along with the 3 from the hoop house. They…

Too funny!! Been stuck in the house so long I lost track of the days!
I don't know about you guys but I have totally lost track of which day of the week it is! Sometimes I do that during the summer as well when my whole family is home but I'm really bad right now! Even though our church is having service online on Sunday mornings I guess it's just not the same. That's my anchor for the week…
