Lazy spring foraging in the pasture
We took a couple hours this afternoon to go through our pasture to forage. If spraying doesn't happen around our place tomorrow, we'll go out again & see what we can get. We have plenty of all of these right now because nobody is out on this piece of pasture just yet. We will be making a note of that...not until the…

Suggestions or recipes to use Hawthorn?
Living with 46 acres in Western New York brings us a lot of naturally grown medicinal plants, including tons of hawthorn bushes, yarrow, plantain, dandelion, red raspberry, and so many more. However, I have a difficult time finding different recipes using Hawthorn other than extract for heart disease/congestive heart…

Sapping season
It looks like we could get a full two weeks of perfect sapping weather. Our maples are Manitoba maples. Our sap to syrup ratio is 40:1. We put in almost all of our spiles today. We ran out of buckets & lids. We are trying to figure out what we might have that can be fill in collection containers. Right now we have about 20…

Medicinal properties of Spruce & Poplar buds
I am considering using fresh spruce needles in some medicinal blends. Then started to wonder what the medicinal properties are like in the dead winter here in our far north climate. Maybe someone has some experience in this field? Admin edit: Discussion title edited to include further discussion of medicinal poplar buds

Winter Foraging
I have read this before. It is a good reminder that foraging can be done year round, and a good refresher to read over the list. I want to do some plant foraging walks with our small homeschool group in different seasons. We are at the very beginning planning stages for activities right now, but this is certainly one that…

Sea buckthorn- what do you do with berries and seeds?
My sea buckthorn My sea buckthorn (hippophae rhaminoides) bush has grown into a real beauty and this is the first year that I have so many berries. I have managed to obtain Friesdorfer Orange - a monoecious plant - the one that has male and female blossoms and I do not have to have two plants. Well the berries are there,…

Grindelia - Gumweed
I have known for awhile that we had Grindelia growing in this area but I had never identified it before. We were out yesterday (to our local garlic festival) and on the way home, I noticed that some of the Yellow Salsify (it has become a very invasive weed here) was flowering again. Then I spotted what I thought looked…

Huito tree, fascinating!
We found this fruit in a "grape" pop. Our oldest daughter had also bought some prepared as a safe & temporary surface tattoo ink. It is mainly found in Peru, but can be found in Mexico too. Every part sounds useful/medicinal and the fruit is reported to be tasty. If only we could grow this here. Haha...it would certainly…

Cracked wall pine pollen?
I was reading an email that listed the benefits of pine pollen. Sadly, my most easy to harvest source dried up just as it should have released much of its pollen. I suspect that's the effect of the spray. It would have been a heavy harvest as all the pollen thingys (yes, I know, a real herbalist term). Edit: ah...buds(!)…

How much Equisetum Hyemale is considered therapeutic?
I have gathered that it should only be taken for 10 days at a time but I don’t know how much to take. I’m average in height and weight and I need the connective tissue support and strengthening for bones and nails.

Wild Garlic
I have a huge patch of Wild Garlic. I would say 20 foot by 30 foot. Most of this I will let grow so that I have scrapes to harvest and use. But I did dig some up today. They are so mild when they are small like they are now. Do you harvest wild garlic and how do you use it?

Spring Foraging
I'm sure it is long past this time for many of you, but here in Central BC, it is time for the early spring greens. Dandelions are just flowering and the greens are excellent. I went for a drive into the mountains yesterday on a search for fiddleheads. As there is still nearly 3 feet of snow in parts of the area we were…

Foraging Calendars for North America! PDF
What a great resource! These are not free (nor should they be with the work that will have been put into them). Find which one suits your area. I think I will get one and continue to add any extra plants/herbs that might not be listed in my area if it is a printable calendar.
