Marjory's weekend project 2018 08 26 harvesting plantain for medicine

I have walked all over this land and I apparently don't have any plantain. We had it all over at another place but not here. I found several sources for seed. Which type do I need for medicine? Amazon has Plantago Major, English Plantain, Variegated Plantain (beautiful) and one they just call Common Plantain. None of them are terribly expensive, I just want to plant the most potent one.

Plantago major (Common Plantain aka Broadleaf Plantain) is the one most commonly used in medicine although Plantago lanceolata (Ribwort Plantain aka Narrowleaf Plantain) can be used as well. Mountain Rose has seeds or if you are in Canada try Richters.

Loving this thread. I have a salsa bottle of dried plantain soaking in olive oil hidden in a cupboard. It's hidden because if my father finds it and doesn't know what it is, it gets tossed. Just like my home rendered lard. I'm planning to make salve with it.

the broadleaf plantain is soooo much better than the narrow leaf - mostly because it's easier to harvest 😛
It takes forever to get enough narrow leaf for a poultice... But @RustBeltCowgirl yeah, using the narrow in oil is a great use for it. Oh, BTW, I used to get so much stuff throw out! Ha, ha, "but that's an experiment, not garbage!" LOL

@Marjory Wildcraft I've got a "poop" ton of both. Can't wait for the "yard barn" to be delivered. Back third of it (separate wall & door) will be my lab.

Not too difficult with this batch. Entire clump is about the size of a basketball.

Sorry about size of picture, need to practice on reccommended sizing.

i line my paths with plantains. They’re really a pretty plant. Also, the seeds are a source of good fiber.

I sear every time I see a picture of plantain it looks different than the last picture I saw. I keep think I found a patch of one or another but then maybe I’m wrong. I wish someone with foraging skills would come walk my property and tell which weeds are edible and medicinal!
