Good to know how to use this with the birds! Unfortunately I have enough of them that it would make us go broke. I can grow a few of these, but of course not all.

Would this work if a problem arose (thereby targeting hopefully only a few...and costing me less)? Or would it be merely preventative?

I make a safe "chicken salad" for some chickens when some got sick with a respiratory condition. I fed them and also the others that were in the same building. The sick ones lived (I am sure it was due to the salad) & the healthy ones stayed healthy. A few of these herbs above were ingredients in my salad that was targeting the respiratory tract & blood circulation.

Peppy...I don't believe in flu / cold season :) and yet I sit here with bronchitis since friday!, But, it simply does not exist :) what exists is change in seasons and temperatures, times of year that we may not be taking optimal care of ourselves..lots of kids get sick when they go back to school because they haven't supported their immune system all summer, stayed up late, ate crappy etc etc. the kids in my practice that start with immunity building herbs a month before school never get sick :)

I am sure if someone (human or otherwise) gets sick they can use some of these herbs in combination, look for the specific actions as everyones cold presents differently. Immune herbs often also will cleanse the blood and support respiration kind of an all around for colds/flus so YAY for your chickens :) you certainly don't need to use ALL of them all the time I would chose a few and rotate so the animals immune systems don't get "used" to a given herb or herbal combination.

I was just wondering about our immune systems getting used to certain herbs. So you think we should always be on at least one immune boosting herb all the time, since flu season doesn’t exist? Should we rotate every few weeks or months?

    Great topic!

    Thanks,

    A

i don't think supporting the immune system is something we should ever stop doing in our diet and lifestyle. Germs don't attack us , we create an internal environment in which they will either thrive or die. However, I don't think we need to have a 12 month ongoing rotation of herbs to do that, that is more allopathic in thinking. If you stay healthy, eat clean, exercise and get your lymphatic system moving at least 4 times a week, actively supporting the immune system isn't really necessary. IF you know certain times of year you usually get sick, start a month before and support the immune system, nourishing with herbs etc. If you know you're going to be exposed to something, support the immune system actively. Those are my thoughts :)

Something of interest to add...when we drank raw milk from our cow, we found that we were sick much less often.

I am so very much looking forward to bringing a currently lactating cow home within the next couple of weeks.

just like breast milk for infants there is lots of great stuff in raw milk that help support our immune systems!  whenever the government makes something that is natural  illegal to obtain,  9 out of  10 times its because the substance is either effective or threatening to big pharmas products and processes or in most cases BOTH :) .
