Public Pool Pink Eye - the curious case of conjunctivitis

I was born with one bad eye and one Really Bad eye. As in, one is legally blind.

I have never had pink eye before, so of course the first time I do it has to swell my "good" eye almost completely shut.

So here I squint, face inches from the computer display, typing out a plea for help! What are your best home medicines for treating conjunctivitis?

If you look at Dr. Axe's site, you will see that pink eye can be either bacterial or viral. He also has suggestions on various natural remedies to try. I have also read that a chamomile tea bag helps. He in fact, makes a remedy using honey, fennel, chamomile & other herb(s).

This is from Kim. P. Khalsa's class on eye health:

    • Hygiene for entire family

    • Vit A+C eye drops

     • Botanical eyewash

     • Eyebright (antiseptic)+Raspberry leaf+Goldenseal

     • Immune support or antiallergy support

Good luck in trying to clear it up. Pink eye is never fun.

    Thank you @Laurie!

I actually did try the Dr. Axe recipe but it didn't seem to heal things any faster or slower.

I wonder what Kim had in mind for a botanical eyewash.. that sounds refreshing even without pink eye 👨‍🎤

    Thanks again!

Haha whoops...it is "K." not Kim. I missed correcting my spell check. So the source is K. P. Khalsa.

    @Jimerson I wondered the same.

You are welcome. I am glad that you are feeling better!

Hey @Jimerson , I had the "Mother of all eye infections" a few years back. I found poulticing really helped. I did a prickly pear slurry in a pillow case type deal. But the most comforting - although a bit expensive - was a slab of meat. I had these thin steaks from and inexpensive cut.

    The dogs enjoyed it afterwords.

I got my eye infection from being in the desert for a week and constantly rubbing my dry eyes. The lesson there was - stay hydrated so my eyes don't get itchy!

@Marjory Wildcraft Wow that looked Painful. Wish I had had a steak for my face yesterday!!

It is so hard not to subconsciously rub an itchy/dry eye..

Oh goodness -- bless your heart! We took the kids to the local Rec Center pool a couple of weeks ago, and they ended up with some seriously red eyes. We were worried it might be some weird community germ, but it just turned out to be that the chlorine had exacerbated some existing allergies. (This year's allergy season has been especially horrendous for pretty much everyone in this area....) I've added eye drops to their daily routine, and it's helped tremendously....

Good to know Jimerson. - Read that both Marjorie & you were born legally-blind,

as in 20/200 or less in your better eye with use of the best eyeglass lens to correct your eyesight ?

    otoh,

was born with 20/10 vision, - that in grade-school became so limited I was fitted w/ glasses for Near-sightedness. And it was discovered that mainly after being mis/judged harshly would my sight deteriorate, & some days I saw practically nothing. Too glasses (causing field restriction, or poor peripheral vision) also limited vision progressively, so aiming to restore my vision to 2010. <- Wondering if you also have this as a possibility & goal Jimerson ?

Wondering if you know what Nutrients can help you too: minerals like Selenium & Zinc, & practically all vitamins like A, & the B's: Thiamine (vit. B1), riboflavin (vit. B2), niacin (vit. B3), pyridoxine (vit. B6), methylfolate (vit.B9) & methylcobalamin (vit.B12); vit. C, vit E, plus long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA from cold-water fish like sardines, and further carotenoid anti-oxidants like lutein & zeaxanthin: which green veggies naturally provide. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/eye-vitamins#section9 Also the herb Eyebright I take in a multi-formula.

Anyway just reaching out to say Keep up your healthy progress with both your eyes :)

I wasn't aware of those many different vitamins and minerals that promote eye health and I appreciate you listing them! I will continue to nurture my eyeballs and see what can be done about this funky astigmatism. =]

When my teenage son got pink eye he refused to go to the doctor, but school would not allow him to return until it healed. I had him brew some chamomile tea and place the cooled tea bag over his eye for hours (8-10 hours or so). The next day the pink eye was gone. This also works for a sty. It is now my go to remedy.

@t655 I didn't even think about using the teabag itself! I just used the brewed chamomile as an eyewash. I don't know if it helped it heal any quicker, but it did make it feel physically better (at least for a little bit) following the wash.

Astigmatism...yes, fun stuff. I would like to be free of that was well.

  • Well because it is in one eye so we have to exclude allergy. It is infection most likely either viral or bacterial. After this swelling of the eyelid disappear you might notice the presence of a bump. This bump is called chalazion.

Just warm compress with massage can be helpful. If no improvement or you noticed any eye redness, discharge or blurry vision you should visit your eye doctor.
