Today's lesson-historic uses of wild yam
Wild yam has a long history. It was a favorite herb of the eclectic's. Even back then, wild yam was known for its effect on severe abdominal pain, or gripping. The more popular use of wild yam by the eclectics though was for what they called bilious colic, which was severe gallbladder pain caused when a gallstone blocks the duct out of the gallbladder. Wild yam relaxes nerves and tissue which is why it stops gripping, and in the case of gallstones that allows the stone to pass through. The other less common use of wild yam was for morning sickness and when the uterus knots during pregnancy.
