Best water filter for traveling? 💧
The next few years are going to be very heavy travel years for me - this Grow Network is demanding so much! (I'm not complaining... in fact I love it, but it's still quite intense).
I've gotten spoiled by very clean, beautiful water for the past years while I was living so remotely. And now, as I'm getting out more, I'm realizing just how bad the water supply in most cities is. Yikes!
What is your recommendation for a good travel water filter? I'm tending to be in a lot of AirBnB's and some hotels. I like to drink at least a gallon each day. More realistically is two gallons per day as I often cook for myself (that's why I like AirBnB's).
Do you have a favorite? Something light and compact...

Alexapure makes some smaller water filters.

sawyer makes a really good compact water purifier both as a pouch and an inline for a camelbak i own both. i also own one that is for a 5 gallon buck so its like a berky, id also maybe invest on a filter if the waters really dirty and maybe a steripen

@Marjory Wildcraft let me know if you have trouble finding the ones i mentioned above i will find the site where i got mine from

@Marjory Wildcraft Berkey makes a small travel filter (available at Amazon and several other sources). They would work well for you if you are staying at Air B&Bs. If you are travelling lighter, Lifestraw makes an assortment of water filters including bottles, straws and camelback types. (also available at Amazon and several other sources)

@Marjory Wildcraft If you're in an area with municipal water, the Kishu Charcoal filter works well. It's just a chunk of charcoal, so it's very light and compostable when it's worn out. We fill up a glass pitcher with water from home (our pitcher has a lid and we cram it in the cooler so that it stays upright). We also fill canning jars with good, home water for everyone. In the morning, we refill our jars from the pitcher and fill the pitcher with dubious tap water. After a day in the jug with the charcoal, the water in the pitcher is good to drink.
We have used this system for a couple of years and it's worked well for us. On the last day of a trip of couple of years ago, I didn't feel like lugging everything in and doing the water routine. I really regretted my decision.
Obviously, this method doesn't work with air travel, but the charcoal itself is extremely packable.

@torey look up sawyer water purifiers, they are cheaper than the life straw and last longer. i sent them with my teenagers when they went to work for Idaho conservation corps cause they spend 5 weeks out in the middle of nowhere. also i found berkey to be way out of my budget and liked the sawyer better. just a thought 😀

Hi @Gail H SOmeone gave me a piece of that kind of charcoal a long time ago, but I didn't get around to experimenting with it. How long does one piece last? If I recall, it was like about the size of a quarter cup or so....
And I guess it works by neutralizing chlorine, and other contaminants?
I susually travel with a quart jar :)
And in AirBnbs I could sue whatever pots they have....

Has anyone got any experience with the platypus two bag filtering system? Looks like it weighs only 11 ouncex...
I saw some campers using this on a backpacking trip a few years ago. I got so tired of pumping that was needed with my system I loved the simplicity of gravity fed filtering...!

@Marjory Wildcraft the sawyer i use is like the platypus, they are gravity fed and then there is the one that you hook inline with a camel bak moontrail.com is where i bought ours but amazon ,cabellas sells them too

@Marjory Wildcraft The Kishu charcoal lasts three months. You refresh it every month by boiling it then leaving it to dry and it's ready to go again. After three months, it can hit the compost pile.
