marigolds for companion planting

I bought some marigold ( Tagetes) seeds to use as companion plants near my squash and melons. I read that French marigolds work well to keep pests at bay. According to what I have read, Mexican marigolds are too much of a good thing, but I can't find any specific information on African marigolds (Tagetes erecta). They are larger than the French marigolds (Tagetes patula) and look like they would be very pretty but I don't want to poison my melons. Has anyone used marigolds successfully as companion plants?
