lacto-fermented asparagus

I finally got my hands on some asparagus and would like to lacto-ferment some. I never have a problem with cucumber pickles, sauerkraut or purslane, but asparagus tends to get specks of black mold. Strangely enough, my Japanese knotweed often does, as well. (The latter is so acidic that I'm shocked that it molds.) Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I really don't want to gamble on food preservation that year; we've had a pay cut and an increase in the size of our household.
