My first melon pit

Inspired by David the Good, I dug my first melon pit yesterday. He suggest digging three feet down; I wimped out at 22 inches- pretty tough clay after the first foot. I dropped in the bones from a boiled chicken, some dried plant stalks, and some half-rotted compost. I stirred some lime into the soil that I added back.
I'll be planting winter squash there in a week or so- I will report back on its progress.

David the Good's melon pit is just the most fascinating thing ever! I tried it a few years ago when I was short on money and fertile soil, and it actually worked. I would love to hear about your experience as well.
