Purple Basil Jelly

When I was growing up my dad would take a sprig of Purple Basil and stick it in his shirt pocket. Throughout the day as he worked, it would get bruised and my dad always smelled like purple basil. I planted some this year and it is growing like gangbusters. Today I picked enough to make jelly with it. Even though I messed up making it, the end result was beautiful and tasty! If you haven't ever tried purple basil, you don't know what you're missing. I usually just pick some leaves and put it on my toast with honey in the mornings. It's one of my favorite herbs.

What is your favorite herb and what do you do with it?

Oh gosh, @naomi.kohlmeier - this sounds wonderful. I can see using purple basil jelly on a sharp grilled cheese or as a marinade for sweet and sour chicken! Do you have a recipe you'd be willing to share? I like purple basil tisane as well, sometimes with a litle lime and honey and ice.

@Ferg I used the recipe on the sure jell package....sort of. I didn't read the recipe all the way through and realized I added the sugar too soon. It all worked out in the end and the jelly is so so good!

Ooooh! The purple basil tisane sounds lovely!

I'm thinking it make a good lemonade flavor, too!

What a great idea. I’ve never heard of basil jelly before. It’s now on my list of things to make.

@naomi.kohlmeier it makes a really nice citrus drink too... i like lime, myself, with some honey. What's really cool is that the citrus makes the drink turn pink! It's basil pink lemonade, if you use lemons (-:
