My first half-way decent net
I was a little surprised how hard it was to get back into tying nets after 20 years. The first couple of tries were pretty bad. Here is a little net bag I just finished that turned out okay.

@judsoncarroll4 You are such a talented person! I'd prefer a bottle of well aged single malt, though. :)
Are you thinking of making fishing nets? I have been watching the "Alone" series on TV and am very impressed with the net making skills that some of the participants display.

@judsoncarroll4 That's really nice work.
My preference would be a fine Rum.
I haven't tied macrame in years and I need some new plant holders but not alot of cord around...suppose I could check out amazon..grr
That looks like jute..if it isn't what kind of cord is it?
-
I used to drink single malt.... back when I got paid in drinks for playing music! Heaven Hill is one of the last American owned, true Kentucky Bourbon Whiskies left. It isn't fancy, and it is actually one of the cheapest bourbons on the market, but it is good. It is smooth and honest, not sophisticated, but not rough.
Yes, I'm working up to cast nets. Gill nets would be good for survival. Will definitely do some hoop/fyke nets for fish and turtles.
-
Yep, jute. Jute is hard to use with netting knots though, so I probably won't use it again. It binds and doesn't slide easily. I want to dig out my old macramé books as soon as I get a chance. I used to make all kinds of stuff.

@judsoncarroll4 Boy does that bring back memories. Not the whiskey, the macrame.😉
Great idea for a project to do during the summer heat.
-
... well, I was out of potatoes!
-
@judsoncarroll4 that's a really great survival, and just for fun idea as well...netting fish
let me know if you find a good on line supplier of nylon kinda thing for the nets
-
I want to find some good, high quality cotton to make hammocks, too. I guess I'll start with para chord.

I haven't practiced my knots in way too long. I'll have to study. I can only remember how my granddad showed me to tie on a fish hook.
-
I was surprised how much I've forgotten - I guess you do have to practice knots to be able to use them when you need them.
-
Ooh I love your bag. I just bought a little macrame kit for decor to start. I don’t know if it’s the same thing though. Great inspiration thank you
-
Very similar. The netting knot is a little different. Sailors used to live by their knots for sailing and for making nets. Macramé was the crafts they would make in their spare time, to sell when they came into port. I used to make very intricate macramé hemp belts, bags and guitar straps to sell at concerts.

Very cool! Does anyone have a particularly helpful website for learning this art/skill?
-
-
Thanks @judsoncarroll4 ! Checking it out now!
-
Wow that's really cool!
-
@Mary Linda Bittle One of the fishing knots a friend taught me years ago was the cinch knot...pretty sure I'm misspelling that knot. I used to have a piece of paper included in some of the fishing line that had lots of diff fishing knots shown...prolly got pulled in with my pole the night the really big one got away lol.........
@judsoncarroll4 I thought you might have done another one????
-
I have done a few more, but have been distracted lately - focusing on herbs.
-
@judsoncarroll4 When you get time, what kind of cord/s are you using?
-
Basically, whatever I can buy for $1. Next year, I want to tie a cast net and a hammock. I'll use braided fishing line on the cast net and probably parachord for the hammock.
-
@judsoncarroll4 You might want to try clothes line cord..cheaper than a lot of the other stuff and great for practice/learning while at the same time sturdy...will eventually rot if left outside though. Post pix as you get them done...anxious to see them.
Happy Turkey Day to you and yours..

Thanks - back at ya!

What net? All I saw was some Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky! 😍
-
@judsoncarroll4 very cool and I am a Jack Daniels girl 😊
