Earthquake in NC

Just when you thought this year couldn't get any stranger, a 5.1 earthquake just happened near Sparta, NC! The southern Appalachians experience frequent, small quakes - most can't be felt. This was the biggest earthquake in NC since 1916. Sparta is very rural - I grew up not far from there.. like two counties over, so I know the area well. So far, no reports of injuries or major damage. They say it could be felt as far away as Alabama. It woke me up around 8:10. So, that is a hurricane and an earthquake in less than one week.... the plague has been here for 6 months... presumably the frogs and locusts, rivers turning to blood and fire from the sky will be next!

Oh wow! My siblings live about an hour away from there. I've been through two (that I know about) and they were pretty disconcerting to me, however the people from California that I was with at the time didn't even blink.

@judsoncarroll4 it's just crazy. I never thought I'd live to see the book of Revelation come to life. They are still having small quakes in parts of Idaho, which is not unheard of, but not real common, either. And wildfire season is upon them. This year it seems that there's some idiot setting fires just off the highway in multiple places.
Oh, and cattle mutilations are big in Oregon this year.

@judsoncarroll4 My appologies for reposting what you already posted. Since you are a mod can you take mine down, but give me a few min to copy the link and i'll post it here. Sorry I wanted to get it out asap in case anyone had family in that area...

@judsoncarroll4 I tried 4 times to delete it and it keeps coming back so please delete it for me. Again, my apologies for the trouble.

Sure, no problem. I'm cooking jambalaya so I'll respond to comments later.

Well, on the bright side, if we have to have hurricanes and earthquakes, then I can only hope things stay so mild. We had thunderstorms last night worse than the hurricane! If it does begin raining frogs I'll fry up some frog legs!
-
We did have a huge storm with widespread overland flooding (and some repeated flooding) about a month ago. We drove through it and that was exciting to say the least, especially with a tornado warning still in place...and there had been one by then.
We had only 4" after having had only 1/2" of rain all spring. Many places, within 15 min of here, got 8"-12 within a couple hours. We have been dry at our place since with no measurable rain.
Two nights ago, there was a tornado warned storm that brought down an EF2 in Manitoba's "tornado alley." That was through an area we'd been through just the day before when we went to see friends...again, that was not too far from here, and we had warnings out here too for that. The storm chasers love that corner of MB in particular.
We expected the rating to be higher considering windspeed & damage. It hurt one, & killed two young people when thrown from their vehicle, and tore through a farm & fields. There were many spectacular (perfect) pictures & videos of that twister, one in front of a lake.
I have only experienced 2 earthquakes, both no more than a 2. This prairie girl noticed of course, but yeah, the Californians present didn't notice at all. It made the local paper, since earthquakes are rare in the Black Hills. Never mind that they have a cave tour that features a fault. 😏
Exciting times.
Has there been much damage from the quake, @judsoncarroll4?

I'm in metro Atlanta where a lot of people said they felt it. I was not one of them. Until I saw it on facebook this afternoon I had no idea.
I have to agree with @Mary Linda Bittle about never thinking I'd see the book of Revelation come to life but it seems we might be.
-
Everything seems to be fine here, thanks. I've experienced 3 earthquakes that registered around 3. This was the biggest NC has had in a century. Had its epicenter been in Winston Salem, around 50 miles away, there would have been major damage. So, we dodged the bullet and can laugh about it.

Glad you're ok. I was living in Battle Creek, MI in 2015 and there was an earthquake nearby and it shook my house like crazy. Definitely an intense experience!
-
I was in Los Angeles during the 1992 Northridge Quake and it was one of the scariest moments of my life. Thought we were going to die. Massive, continual aftershocks for two weeks. I'm on the East Coast now...was hoping to never experience an earthquake again, ever.

@judsoncarroll4 did you have loads of plywood on hand!
-
... I think you my be the only person who actually listens to the youtube stuff I post! Curious though. How did you as an Aussie find the unfiltered southern accent? We have similar roots.
-
@judsoncarroll4 understood perfectly. You going to start some stand-up !

Wow! We can laugh! No matter the circumstance, that is mankind! I was in Trinidad, a small village, and the hurricane came pretty fast-I was under the covers in no time! Stayed there, hardly much protection-the roof came off of the police station a mile away...the wind died down, I was still under the covers, glad of them, even-I was visiting, of course. Book of Revelation, oh, yes, I am onto it, into it, blessed in the reading or hearing, that is a blessing-geoengineering is at play, but the Book does say, like the pangs of childbirth, closer and closer together-geoengineering can do that kind of thing-get specific, besides the aluminum, barium, stronium all over the land (that cld be a song), but hardly a laughing matter. If we call on God He will show us 'great and mighty things which u(we)know not' Jeremiah 33:3-know this one by heart at this time.
-
@Jannajo Amen to calling on the almighty and his word..
-
5.1 is a decent moderate quake, especially for those not used to earthquakes! Is there some geothermal hot spot or weak spot @judsoncarroll4 there, as you said there are often small quakes around that area? It can't be plates colliding as there is only one plate .

@judsoncarroll4 At least frogs and locusts are tasty when prepared correctly...

I've never had locusts... although, I hear cicadas taste like shrimp! I've had grasshoppers, ants, bees, and such but mainly as novelty candies. I do love frog legs though - one of my absolute favorite meats! I love them breaded and fried, or sautéed in olive oil with onions, garlic, celery, peppers and tomato.
-
@judsoncarroll4 I would love to try frog legs, and there are large leopard frogs in my general area, but it is illegal to do anything with them here.
-
We use big bullfrogs. They used to be available in most fish markets, but now I rarely see them for sale. The exception is Asian markets. They usually have a much better, much fresher selection of seafood. They also, most always have frog legs. The farm raised ones that originated around Rayne, Louisiana, are huge! Their back legs are the size of thicken thighs, and the front legs are big enough to eat, too. The flavor of the meat is somewhere between very mild white meat chicken and fresh water fish, with almost a buttery quality. When I get settled, I want to have a frog pond so I can ensure water quality and diet. A couple of small ponds for frogs, fish, crawfish and snapping turtles... maybe some fresh water clams and shrimp if creek fed... and edible aquatic plants, would be good for food security, water storage and fire safety.
