I have other old recipes that call for using whole green walnuts as opposed to walnut shells. But, I can't lay my hands on them right now.

Wow, I'd never heard of these different "catsups". The mushroom one sounds wonderful! I love how the older cookbooks are written. I'm not always familiar with some of the measurement terms and some of the containers and such are more difficult to source now. It is truly fascinating when one fully imagines a life in that time, and how their days were filled.

I agree. I have a shelf full of the old books.... the authors of the Virginia housewife and the Carolina Housewife were both distantly related to me, though marriage and such. Carolina housewife has good Catsup recipes, but it is not close at hand and not available in a pdf.
