First taste of autumn

It has been very hot in the southeast this year. I know it is still crazy hot out west, but we got a nice cold front, with another coming in tomorrow... bringing the high temps down from around 100F to 70-low 80s and some really pleasant nights. The sun angle and quality has shifted toward fall. So, tonight I made a fall supper. In autumn, I like sauerkraut (I always like kraut!) pierogis, nice, fatty sausages, pierogis and haluski.... beef stroganoff... game birds and such.. root veggies and apples.

I know, we had a hot summer too!

@judsoncarroll4 Your posts always make me hungry! The food you mention sounds really good.

Been up and down here in NW Wisconsin. Had a late season freeze to start the garden season and lots of folks lost plants-I lost some including ones that were covered. This week have had 2-3 frost warnings and hard freezes 50 miles or so North of me. Covered my plants twice this week and all survived. Picked some nice tomatoes, peppers and squash today. WHEW! :)

When I walked to work yesterday at 5:30 am (9/19) I saw the thermometer at the bank read 56 degrees, and it only got up into the high 70s! My kind of weather, and I will be delighted if I don't have to turn the air conditioner back on again.
This morning, I got to sleep until 6:30, and had pulled up the blanket in the night. I got out the hoodie to walk Sammy. I love fall more than all the other seasons put together!
Time to start making soups, stews, casseroles, and hot chocolate in the evening.

Fall is my favorite season, too. It went down to 38 F here last night. I'd prefer a good frost to knock out the ragweed... but I'm sure not complaining!

When I was younger, October brought jackets. Of recent years, December allowed t-shirts and no jackets. Based on mild fall seasons of late, I bought ducks, planning for them to move outside to enjoy warm days and nights at about 24 days old. Fall surprised me with cool days and even cooler nights. My fine feathered friends will remain inside a tad longer than I planned. PS They are not the best smelling of friends, even with their bath tub time!

For me, it is time to live in jeans and boots, flannel shirts and my 70 year old Herter's upland field Jacket. I HATE wearing shorts! It is time for fall mushrooms and hunting, bushels of oysters, the smell of dry leaves and wood smoke.
-
@judsoncarroll4 I live in jeans or overalls, just the shirts change for the season. Not too fond of coats, so I wear hoodies, deep into winter as I can. I already smell fires in wood stoves and tobacco barns. Having a 70 year old upland field jacket is impressive!

The story in that is that about 20 years ago I bought a little hunting lodge built in the 1940s. No heat, nothing fancy. The old man wanted it just a a summer place for his kids and duck hunting on his own. It has been a challenge... but, the heirs left his old hunting jacket in a closet. It fit me perfectly, so it was a done deal.

Ham steak with fried apples...My favourite for fall!

With a drop in temps and the opening of the windows out comes the homemade soups. Bean and ham, split pea, cream of potato. And let's not forget the homemade bread!!
-
@judsoncarroll4 Do you make your pierogis? If so, would you share the recipe please?
-
Yes. This is basically the recipe I use... I "eye-ball" everything, or go by feel the dough, so this will give you more exact measurements. The main key is to roll out the dough very thin. Other than that, I usually do potato, garlic and cheese filling, with sauerkraut on the side.
