@torey Oh, I didn't know there was one about the kitchen garden! I will want to watch that! Thank you!
Thanks for the knowledge channel link, @LaurieLovesLearning. Yes, they are incredible programs. Excellent for anyone who wants to see how things were done in the past. And probably good for off-grid learning etc as well. Never thought of them that way.
-
Yes, @Jenny Talbott, there is so much to learn here! I've put the certification courses on hold for now, but in the winter I plan to set aside a certain amount of time a week for them. That's what I try to do with the forums, too. Don't get overwhelmed, just join the party!
-
@Annie Kate Waiting on the certifications until later sounds like a good plan. We home school and are taking a longer winter break this year with our co-op due to everything. So I can try to tackle some of them then. Thank you for the idea. And I'll do my best not to get overwhelmed. I just wish I had more free time on the computer but during the day my kids are using it for school work. I'll figure this out though, after all, this is only my second day on the site.😉
-
@Jenny Talbott You could always check out the Academy and see if there are any courses that might be appropriate for home schooling projects. Depending on their age they might like the Saving Quality Seeds course or maybe they might like to learn about rabbits, chickens, ducks or goats if they are into animals or maybe 4H..That way you could do them together.
-
So much to learn, read, see, experience, so little time. I constantly have to tell myself to slow down and focus on what is important to me. I love interacting in the forums and need to find more time to get involved in the classes. Baby steps, baby steps.
-
@torey Yes, that's a wonderful idea! My kids are in 9th grade, 7th grade, 4th grade and 2nd grade. And I told my oldest that I was part of the street team now and we could check out all that this site has to offer. She grows herbs for her chicken's health (our chickens are pets with benefits - yummy eggs😀) and thought about 4H however there was no groups for chickens near us. And I'm not sure I fully understand how 4H works in order to start one. But we'll have to definitely check out the site together. Thank you for suggesting it.
-
@Grounded I couldn't have said it any better. I should look over things and make priorities. Thank you for the helpful thoughts.😊
-
@Jenny Talbott Have you seen this discussion for home schoolers? https://community.thegrownetwork.com/discussion/844037/homeschoolers-check-in-here/p1

Thank you for sharing this valuable peace of history with us.
-
I was gifted the 1946 Eighth Edition of The National Formulary. Among other older books on health and disease is "Physiological Basis of Medical Practice" (West and Taylor, Sixth Edition) and also "Vitalogy" (actual spelling) which is very interesting. I have a Merck Manual somewhere but I think it is still packed away. One of my great grandfathers was a doctor in central Texas and the love of learning and health/medicine has gone down the line lol.
It is so awesome @judsoncarroll4 that you found that amazing resource for us all! Ever wish you could do just like on the movie The Matrix and just plug into something and two seconds later you know all about it? I sure do lol.
-
Wow! That is interesting. It will be cool to see how many remedies we still use today.
-
Oh this is going to be a fun exploration! Plus I have a friend who is moving into my neck of the woods in a few weeks... she just LOVES this sort of stuff. It will be fun to share with her. Thanks for the referrals!
-
@torey I just found it thank you.
😊
-
Yes, I want to get involved more in the classes, too. Focusing on the important things requires knowing what is important you you. I find that a big decision. LOL
-
Awesome! Thanks so much:)
-
Wow, great find! Thank you so much for sharing.

Okay, I'm new to herbs kind of and I noticed all the materia medicas and I have multiple materia medicas, but mine are all for homeopathy. Are these ones that are listed on this thread for herbs?
-
There are all sorts of materia medicas. Those for homeopathy are specific to homeopathy. Some are for traditional herbal medicine. Some are herbal energetics. Some are Traditional Chinese Medicine. Some were used by doctors and pharmacists in earlier eras of medicine. The book I posted was a pharmacist manual for making medicine. It wasn't long ago when medicine was predominantly plant based and pharmacists still worked with herbs.
-
@judsoncarroll4 thank you! That is awesome! I really wish medicine was still predominantly plant based. I can't wait to start growing my own herbs and using them!
-
There is no reason it can't be, but we'll have to do that ourselves.
-
@Brindy Have you studied homeopathy? Is that why you have homeopathic materia medicas? Which ones do you have?
-
@torey, yes, I use homeopathy all the time and use a variety of materia medicas. I really want to learn herbs because I personally feel there is a time and a place for all areas of medicine. Many homeopathic remedies are made from herbs also. I'm not sure we are allowed to talk about homeopathy on here, maybe a moderator could let us know if we are doing okay. I find that I use oils for some things, homeopathy for some, food for some and a friend of mine has me using herbs for others. It is a synergistic thing.
-
@Brindy Yes, a time and place for all medicines and practices. Yes, we can definitely talk about homeopathy here. There are a few other homeopaths on the forum and offer suggestions on remedy use when it is appropriate.
I am a bit surprised that you have learned homeopathy before learning herbs. It is usually the other way around. I was a herbalist before I started taking homeopathic training. But no matter which way you came to it, glad you have found homeopathy. You will better be able to understand the energetics of herbal medicine as you start to study herbs. And of course, after reading all the homeopathic materia medicas you will have a much better grasp of the language in the older herbal materia medicas like the ones @judsoncarroll4 is so good at finding.

Coca leaf is legal in Bolivia😎, but I'm not sure I could get through Customs with it.
-
Thanks for the source. I've already downloaded it.
-
@torey, that's so cool and I'm super excited about learning herbs. A lot of the remedies I use quite often are made from herbs. I absolutely love love homeopathy and I'm very sad that it's use is in jeopardy.
-
@Brindy I know it is getting more difficult in the States and even in Britain where it has been so widely accepted, there is push back against the practice. We are a bit more fortunate in Canada and can practice quite freely. We are still able to order remedies in from the big pharmacies in Austria and Britain. I hear that has become more difficult in the US. I think you have to be a registered practitioner to order from Hahnemann Labs in CA.
You are going to have a lot of support learning about herbs here on TGN. Members post about courses or webinars that our favourite teachers are presenting. And we are always excited to share finds like the links to these old herbals and pharmacopeia.

I loved the entire Farm series with Ruth Goodman. It's funny that those documentaries you listed are all on my youtube lists haha. I have found that series to be a great resource for both homesteading and herbalism. Combined with history which is another of my favorite subjects makes it utter delight!😍
-
@karenjanicki I feel the same way! 😀 I love all the farm series with Ruth Goodman! I've learned so much from them. I even went back to the first one and started watching them over again in order and my family was like "Aww Mom, not again." 😂
-
Haha I like to watch them in order too! I think my husband probably rolls his eyes but that series is amazing :). There is another good one. I think it's called 24 hours, a life in victorian britain or something like that. Its absolutely fascinating!
