Sobering news: 200 Queens Found in Single 'Murder Hornet' Nest Destroyed by US Authorities

If you can read the following without cringing you are made of sterner stuff than I. 😥

That is a lot of queens in one nest. :(
-
Scary!
-
Maybe I won't be moving to Canada.
I'm so glad they found the nest, but worry about what they didn't find. It's time to put some unemployed people to work finding more bees/nests. Kind of like the WPA during the Great Depression only for agriculture.
-
It really feels like science fiction.
-
The last thing the bee population needs is another invasive species to decimate their numbers.
-
WHAT??!!! Really, I shouldn't be surprised. It's 2020 after all!
-
Yikes!
-
Thanks for the update, Vicki! Yes, it's VERY cringeworthy. I'm a member of the Lost Apple Project, Idaho division, and just sent the link on to the other members. I've been encouraging everyone to keep their eyes open here in Idaho because it wouldn't be a great leap for these things to establish here, and there's plenty of good habitat for them (and way too much open area for authorities to cover effectively0.

@frogvalley It's not just Canada-----I watched a piece on TV the other day where a man in Washington was building wire traps to put into the beehives. The bees could get through, but the hornets could not due to size.
-
This is another type of trap being used----hope I can find the wire one!
-
I agree with @Cornelius .
-
The wire trap sounds like a good idea to protect the bees.
-
@water2world Wire traps are such a good idea! Glad to hear that there is something to help.
-
Oh, dear! I will have to keep an eye open--we have many bee/wasp/hornet species here in Eastern Ontario, but this one would be a problem.
-
wow
-
@Annie Kate I don't think they have made it further than BC at this point.
Does anyone know how far they range? I wonder what they really need to survive...if they could do as well or better than our native Hornets or if harsh winters, away from the coast, could help the spread from occurring deeper into the continent.
-
I hope these do not range down to New Mexico. We last our bees last winter (well--they went somewhere else). This year we left tons of honey and look forward to spring. I love the idea of the trap.

Thank you, @LaurieLovesLearning

@LaurieLovesLearning This might shed a bit of light----something to think about!
