Do trees communicate?
This information was unknown to me, but after researching, I found that it is not new! ''However, I am fascinated with this subject matter. (Can't read enough! LOL)
Just curious what your thoughts are. Thanks

@water2world I am positive that this has been discussed on here before, but I can't find the discussion thread or I would have linked it (relevant tags are important to include in the initial discussion post for just this purpose). I remember talking about my plants "screaming" because they needed water. I must just not have the right search terms.
I don't believe in mystic communication of plants, but do adhere to the fact that they do signal each other a number of things through various chemicals that they release. Protecting against bug infestations, if they are experiencing drought, if some have wounds, etc., these are just some of the reasons that they do so.
There is also the fact that they "communicate," in a sense, to us through chemical release into the air. This is why a forest walk is very beneficial and relaxing.
David Suzuki who hosted "The Nature of Things" on CBC also did an interesting show covering this quite some time ago.

Several good books on this topic have come out in the past few years--I have a stack for my winter reading; the topic fascinates me as well. But the thing is, this is all only news to our modern mainstream culture. Indigenous people living in traditional societies have always known this stuff. Our European ancestors knew it too, and you can find the dim recollections of it in our folklore. It is a hopeful sign that some of us, including some scientists, are beginning to open up to this knowledge and rediscover it again.

@LaurieLovesLearning Thanks---I also tried doing a search, because I didn't want to replicate another posting--I didnt get results, so maybe the person that posted originally can speak to the listing. I would enjoy seeing the other postings.
Guess I just never thought about trees except providing shade etc. I didn't realize/ or thought about them releasing chemicals etc due to insects, animals eating leafs and other trees near them releasing the same chemical,
I had heard of the benefits of forest bathing//walks and love when I can do that----just feels good!

Of course plants talk, probably especially trees. The trick is figuring out the language and what they are saying. For me, smaller plants aren't that hard. Mostly "I'm thirsty and can I have some more of that compost tea you gave us last week?" Trees and large plants I need to work on more.

@MaryRowe I I am going to order a couple of books,: one is pre-order, Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering How the Forest Is Wired for Intelligence and Healing by Suzanne Simard and I would like to order all 3 books (but will start with the first one) in the series of The Hidden Life of Trees. by Peter Wohlleben, Jane Billinghurst, et al.
Have you read any in this series, or are you reading some different books?
-
@Granny Marie I'm just starting to listen to the "I'm thirsty" from my small plants--and wondering what took me so long to realize they were in need! Listening and understanding something bigger than me----Oh my!
-
@water2world On books--well I am a hopeless book addict. On this topic, I just started David George Haskell's The Songs of Trees.
I too have all three of the Wohlleben, Billinghurst et al. books on my wish list, but so far have been able to resist the urge to order, mostly because of the stack already here waiting for me to get to them:
Monica Gagliano, Thus Spoke the Plant: A Remarkable Journey of Groundbreaking Scientific Discoveries....
Merlin Sheldrake, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures
Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants
Sandra Ingerman and Llyn Roberts, Speaking With Nature
I will read all my books before I get any more. Yes I will. Really I will......Now, if only Amazon would stop offering those dollars off coupons for "select e-books on your wish list....." 😏
-
@MaryRowe Looks like a great list. Please let me know how you like Haskell's book!
I could probably insulate an entire house with books! My hubby and I love to read---have a few I haven't gotten to yet, but will!

@LaurieLovesLearning Is this it?

This video was an interesting documentary from the 70s about plant communication. I didn't watch the last bit because it discusses mystic communication with plants, and I don't get into that, either.
-
@Tave Yes! That's the one. Thanks! 😄
-
@Tave Thank you for the documentary video. I love things that make me think!
As, with all subject matter, I try to be careful about agreeing/believing everything. Somethings for me, are not what I believe, so I tend to shy away from using my time in those areas.
I'm also glad you found the post that @LaurieLovesLearning was referring to---Plan to go explore there now!

SOOO fascinating, indeed! Has anyone seen the film by Paul Stamets called "Fantastic Fungi?" This is where I first learned about trees communicating through vast fungal networks in the ground, and even sharing/swapping nutrients to keep the entire forest healthy and thriving. I was amazed! The whole documentary is packed every minute with so much information worth learning about!
-
At first I thought..."you folks are CRAZY!"
Then I realized... you are all a bunch of "FUN GUYS"...😀
(Get it, fun guys,...aka Fungi?" 😁)
-
Aw, @Slippy, I got it. 😄 You know that there is only so Mush-room in the forest, but we can fit you in, I'm sure. I think you've proven that you are a fun-gi too.
@happy-trails I think that I have seen it. I do remember watching a documentary and it was very detailed, and very interesting.
-
@happy-trails Thanks. I am going to check out that documentary!!!!!
-
@Slippy couldn't have said it better than LaurieLovesLearning!! Fun-gi!!

This was on 'pocket' today
If not one believed the article, at least the picture is not only beautiful, but also, when I look at it, it takes me to an almost perfect calm..
-
Awesome! I'm always astounded by the unending complexity of nature. It's incredible how amazingly it was all put together, in ways we couldn't even begin to guess.
-
Anyone ever go see The Pando? 47,000 aspen trees that share the same root system so they are considered a single living organism - they probably communicate through their roots? https://unbelievable-facts.com/2018/04/pando-tree.html#:~:text=The%20Pando%2C%20or%20the%20Trembling%20Giant%2C%20is%20a,and%20one%20of%20the%20largest%20on%20the%20planet
-
@silvertipgrizz That would make the most beautiful livingroom picture. 🥰
-
Beautiful picture. The more I learn about nature, the more I appreciate its Creator.
-
@silvertipgrizz Thanks for the article. I enjoyed reading ,as well as, seeing the picture----BEAUTIFUL!!!
-
@sudborough No, but I would love to see the Pando. I just finished reading the article that you had linked to----it seems that the more I read, the more I want to understand!! So much to learn!!
-
@Tave I agree totally!
-
In Seeds of Hope, Jane Goodall also explains how trees communicate, plus a myriad of other plant related information. There's an Aspen tree in Utah that has cloned itself over 106 acres; https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/fishlake/home/?cid=STELPRDB5393641. Add she mentions 380 million year old tree trunks in Gilboa, NY; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilboa_Fossil_Forest.
This book is a treasure for plant enthusiasts.
-
@dmthennessy oh----Awesome, Thank you----I have added that to my LIST!
-
Fascinating subject for sure.
