The family gift

I showed up at my nieces today with 9 large buckets.

Two full of rabbit poo

Two with broken down aged compost

One with quail poo

Three with chicken poo

and one with Comfrey leaves.

She looked at me and laughed. Since it was a whooping 40 degree we added them to two of her raised bed gardens she is making. She had additional leaves in a pile so we layered leaves and a bucket, then repeated the process. The Comfrey should help it break down in a month or so - just in time for early spring crops.

Last year was Mandy's first garden. She had two 3 by 3 raised bed gardens made from pallets. She has since added two more and has an herbal spiral garden plan she is working on. I am proud she learned so much in one year and loves her time in the gardens.

Her 8 year old son was twice as excited, He wanted to know when he could start planting and what he could plant soon.

@Denise Grant I think your gift stinks! 😉🤣

What a lovely and thoughtful thing to do. It sounds exciting and I love to hear that her son is joining in on the anticipation. Excellent!

A friend gave me a garbage bin with aged manure last year and it made me sooo happy. It was almost embarrassing but I’m over 40 now and too old to care.

If I were to receive a gift like that I would feel very blessed. I don't think anyone around here would ever think to give me anything like that or have the stuff to make it happen lol otherwise I would ask for it for my birthday 😆

Quail poo. I’m going to talk to farmers and invest in that poo for my gardens, thank you @Denise Grant

What a wonderful gift. I know there are folks who would consider it an insult or something but I would find it such a generous and thoughtful gift.

Of course, I also asked for 2x4's for my birthday once and gift cards to Home Depot or Lowe's for Christmas. LOL

@teachercaryn this is the first year I am using quail poo. I like it because its really broke down. I think it would make a good liquid compost - of course with a little rabbit poo thrown in

@vickeym I asked for bags of potting soil one year, and I think compost - before I had animals. Thye asked me - Is that what you really want? Yes, it is.

Did you get your 2x4's and gift cards?

A friend of mine has offered us an open ended invitation to take all the manure she can give us. She has chickens, ducks, geese and horses.

@lewis.mary.e That is a true friend!

I added animals so my small homestead about 8 years ago. One reason I was tired of buying compost! Pretty sad when you have to buy manure.
