Winter Food Festival

If you could attend a 14 day ONLINE Winter Food Festival right now, what would you like to see?
Would you love to play some games, cooking class demos, cook along sessions, a photo competition, tips to plan your next season, empty your freezer sessions, organize your pantry masterclasses? My personal idea is to concentrate on making and using preserves.
What kind of food are you craving right now? Comfort food, health food, deep bowls of goodness, large sharing platters? An all day snack bar, where everyone helps themselves?
I'm considering organzing one, since going to live food festivals has become so difficult for many of us and we all need a pick-me-up, don't we?

Oh, that sounds like fun. 😊 I like the idea of something with chocolate. And then something with garlic roasted in butter to offset the sugar from the chocolate.... And anything to do with organizing the food aspect of my life--garden planning, pantry organizing, freezer emptying.
-
Meal that could be used for another meal. Meal planning tips, herbal seasonings, salad dressing creations, kitchen garden or small herbal garden design or ideas, from garden to platter class, Definitely pantry ideas. Breads. make ahead frozen dinners
Great idea!!
-
Sounds cool! I'd love to have some new comforting warm keto crockpot meals. That would be great.
-
Butchery and charcuterie... always!
-
Everything you mentioned sounds good to me.
-
Flower arrangements, cooking demos, cook-a-longs, baking donuts, a diy guide to smoking cheeses, building chicken tractors, how to harness Earth’s natural elements and apply them into our gardening practices/farming techniques.
-
All great ideas. Keep them coming. And feel free to name a presenter for a certain topic. Perhaps we can invite someone you always wanted to see.
-
I love the garden to plate (and further into preserves idea). I wonder what the best time for that topic is.
In the northern hemisphere it's certainly a good time for planning, isn't it? But do you really plan ahead a lot or do you just start?
-
Flower arrangements - great idea. Hadn't thought of it. Were you thinking table decorations or improvements of winter mood? All flowers or edible flowers? What flowers are available to you now in winter?
-
These all sound like wonderful ideas. I love the idea of butchery and charcuterie. Would love to learn more about using herbs in cooking and how to incorporate herbs into daily use for better health and as they say...letting our food be our medicine.
-
Brueck.iris - Since you want your focus to be on preserves, maybe you would consider fermented preserves as well...?
-
Cool idea! I love all of your suggestions. Would be hard to decide which "classes" to attend.
I think I personally would be most interested in fermenting foods.
-
@Brueck.iris zone 4 in winter so the flowers a available are what are sold in stores, e cept decorative falsies. Table decorations is a good thought :)
-
You mean how to harvest the animal, so that you can butcher it?
-
Absolutely, after all the comments fermented food is high on the list.
-
The beauty of an online winter food festival is that we can record it all, so that you don't need to choose. You can watch it all. Although you can't actively participate in all at once. Disadvantage: there won't be samples to hand around. The closest we could do is have a paid VIP level participation, where we send goodie-parcels by mail before the event.
-
I'd like to see something like quick ice cream recipes and other desserts that were simple to make. Such recipes from around the world would be a plus too. :)
-
Thoughts on what to do with all of the preserves we have!
-
Longing for Ice cream in a winter food festival does surprise me a bit, I have to say. But I guess ice cream is always good.
-
Is that ALL preserves including fermented food? I know the feeling, I've been there, too.
-
@Annie Kate dehydrated candied oranges dipped chocolate!! Good fall yum!!!
i would
love to have a fall festival. Maybe those that have something to add or teach can do demo videos
-
@Brueck.iris I would love winter entertaining/hosting tips, warm drinks, and soup ideas! I love your idea! I totally support you.
-
Thanks. I wonder how about entertaining and hosting tips in this year? How many people can come together? Do we need hosting tips for online get togethers? My family was completely split over 3 locations on Christmas and New Year and we had to toast via Skype and Zoom.
-
Of course fall is a great time for a festival with lots of food available - always inspiring. But for gardeners I wonder if people have time to attend a festival or if they are already too busy in the kitchen cooking and preserving the bounty?
Perhaps an early autumn festival with last minute strategies, when you know which crops in your garden or neighbourhood have performed well?
I was actually inspired to think about a winter food festival because hardly anybody does it. There are very few compared to summer and autumn.
-
What a great idea! Cheese making, dairy and vegan kinds would tickle my fancy.
Love vickeym suggestion about herbs for food and using for health.

In our area in the town Stanwood, the Washington State University Extension office puts on a Country Living Expo and Cattlemen's Winter school. The have many experts come in and give classes for on wide variety of skills and interests. I have gone for several years in the past. This year's event is via Zoom. Should be interesting. Some of their usual classes are hands on, such as how to slaughter and preparing a meat chicken or welding can't be offered this year. Hopefully next year, it will be in person again. Normally it is a one day event. This year, it will be three days. So we will be able to take quite a few more classes.
-
This is fantastic! I hope you can have a real life one soon again. But at least a zoom version for 3 days gives some inspiration, fun and education. Let us know how you like the zoom version. When exactly is it?
-
Thanks for sharing the info about Country Living Expo and Cattlemen's Winter school @marjstratton
The good thing about zoom is that EVERYBODY can attend. Here is the link: https://extension.wsu.edu/skagit/countrylivingexpo/
This link also accesses the impressive class schedule with everything
from plants to animals, outdoors and kitchen. You can attend 12 classes for $55 THIS WEEKEND - AND YOU GET THE RECORDINGS. That's a clear advantage to a live expo - although live is always even more fun.

Edible Snow Globe:
Here is a winter inspiration from the amazing Australian chef Darren Purchese.
He created this recipe for the Australian JUNIOR Masterchef Series 2020. The kids did really well. I think I would have been terrified.
Here is the link to the recipe on his website:

@Brueck.iris I thought there might be some people interested that are further away. Yes, it is a really great deal this year.
