Show 13: Herbs for Sleep

I like to have a tea from fresh lemon balm when in the Sommer as a relaxing tea that helps with sleep. Healthier than the beer 🙄
-
Lemon balm is a good one, especially fresh!
-
Primrose, lemon verbena, lavender, rose petals...
-
I haven't used primrose... please tell me about it. It is such a striking flower, looking almost unreal!
-
I love lemon balm tea, and lemon balm tincture. A dose before bedtime helps calm my mind for a restful sleep.
-
I've bookmarked this to listen to soon! Are you still having problems with YouTube?
-
@jolanta.wittib What species of primrose are you using? I am not familiar with it being used medicinally. What parts are you using?
-
I've heard a tincture of hops makes for a great nights sleep. Also mugwort tincture is great too. That I know from personal experience. It actually only takes a few drops of the tincture for mugwort. Also placing some fresh mugwort in your sleeping room helps. Do be somewhat cautious with mugwort as some people are supper sensitive to it, and may have problems. It is a member of the Artemisia genus, desert sage.
-
@torey I am using wild Primula veris. The blossoms. The scent is so nice. And the colour! I have read that it “is stops the windmill of thoughts”, fears and worries that are not allowing to fall asleep. Locally it is also used for strengthening the nerves. I add it to my “evening mixtures” and “mixtures for sleep”
-
@torey I forgot to insert a photo
-
That is very interesting! This is new info to me, and I'll definitely have to explore it!
-
I switched over to Rumble - thanks for the tip!
-
i use hops - haven't tried mugwort, thanks!
-
I'm glad you mentioned Pedicularis. A lot of people don't know about this herb. Great for musculoskelatal pain. It doesn't grow very close to me but I have found it in the mountain a couple of hours from here.
Sleep is a difficult one to treat. You really have to match the herb to the person and their symptoms. You've given a great selection for people to choose from. Sometimes it will take a combination, like you are finding with your sleep bitters.
I have heard that mugwort will increase dream recall if used in a pillow similar to what you would do with hops.
Be cautious with dosing anemone. Start with single drop doses and increase as needed.
I like motherwort for when I wake up during the night with anxiety. Just a few drops works for me.
-
Oh, I forgot Motherwort! There are so many herbs that can help with sleep. I literally gave up on note taking and basically winged this just talking about herbs as I thought of them.
-
BTW @torey which pedicularises grow in your area? We only have canadensis. If I can figure out how to get some of the western ones, I may give them a try and see if they will grow.
-
You're welcome. I think the more non-political content we can get on these alternative channels the better (though I guess now even herbs are political!) :-P
-
Exactly. But also, there are tons of herbal videos on youtube. I think I'm the only one on Rumble.... consider that over a couple of years 7Song's videos on youtube have gotten like 50-100 views, and he is a big name. I'm getting 200 a week so far on Rumble!
-
According to my reference guide we have 13 species of Pedicularis in BC. Some are more northern than I am and some are quite coastal. P. canadensis is not one of them. The one I am most familiar with is P. groenlandica, Elephant's Head Lousewort. Looking at all the pics again just now, I think I may have seen one of the other species and mistaken it for another member of the Scrofulariaceae family. Some of them are quite stunning with beautiful spikes of magenta flowers. I am going to have to spend more time searching out these other species this year.
If I am in the area when the Elephant's Head has seeds, maybe I can smuggle some to you. :)
-
Wow! That's great! You are inspiring me to get my act together and work on my Rumble channel! :-)
-
I'll take you up on that offer! I'm sorry I didn't get to harvest sassafras this year, but I haven't forgotten.
-
@judsoncarroll4 I listened to your podcast and it was great. Very informative.
-
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it!
