Thanks for posting; this is a thought-provoking article, and seems to me very realistic. Homesteading has always meant different things to different people, and we do it in lots of different ways. That will only be more true in the future. As this article points out, technology is changing life for all of us--even an old luddites like me are gradually adapting bit by bit--and it is good to take stock of how things are changing and how each of us wants to deal with that--exactly where and how far we want to go in making the trade-off of self-reliance for modern comforts, conveniences, and important stuff like health care, education, transportation, and such.

The article also gets you thinking about the ways technology makes that "mixed" lifestyle possible for those who couldn't or wouldn't act on their homesteading dreams otherwise. Now that it is ever more possible to do your job, or even run your own business, entirely on line or nearly so, it might be possible, as the author says, "to have the best of both worlds." Seems like it would be a delicate balance, and you would need to be very clear about what "the best of both" means to you. But any move that helps people into a more self-reliant lifestyle has to be a good thing.

@RustBeltCowgirl Not everyone likes dirt on their hands. ...there are always gloves. ...many of us love digging in the earth. I love a fresh salad outside the door, birds singing in the morning and evening, space and a view myself. Homesteading can be done anywhere to a degree, I believe, developing skills, planning for the future and having food security, etc.

@flowerpower * I agree---- And no better place to to make a salad! What restaurant could offer a better atmosphere?

@flowerpower * If a lot more people had dirt on their hands, their immune systems might be a bit happier.

@water2world Yes, a blanket on the grass with a picnic basket and a nice view makes for fine dining!

@RustBeltCowgirl Funny you say that, lately every time I get dirty hands I am hopeful that it will perk up my body a bit, or maybe just the skin on my hands even. I have had an unusual number of strong antibiotic treatments, and I think my body has lost a precious biome in the process. The antibiotics were helpful, of course.
