Do it yourself Hanging Baskets and Containers
I've always had the saying, "if it holds dirt, it can be a planter."
Here are some ideas for fast and cheap hanging baskets
What have you used for a planter or hanging basket that was different?

I have used old toys, auto parts, old tins and aluminum pop cans.
Oh once i took an old toaster and filled the slots with plants that hung over. I took it to a luncheon for a centerpiece

I would love to see a picture of that!

A used rattan round seat without the cushion of course
A pair of old shoes
An emply cat litter bucket about 3ish gallon size...planted a tomato plant through a hole in the bottom and hung it up on a garden hanger.....all trial runs to see how they worked and how good or bad they looked....ie trial runs except for the shoes I planted..
I think I also used old jeans leg during that trial as well..

I am partial to trailing flowers and leaves in hanging baskets. Does anyone know what plants are used for the tiny trailing leaves?

@Denise Grant When my mother-in-law was living in an assisted living facility, the residents were given a selection of old shoes, boots (rubbers were awesome) to choose from as their planter. The facility was a round building with the center an open outside area. You should have seen the colorful array of footwear with flowers, placed wherever the resident so desired! It was beautiful and everyone loved doing it ! Some they were able to hang, but most were placed around the sidewalks.

@water2world What a wonderful idea. Centers and assisted living facilities should have more planting projects. Its so good for the soul.

How did the pair of old shoes work? Did they last ok throughout the season?
-
I think that is an awesome idea. I agree. I think that would be a great project to do in an assisted living facility.
-
That is so cool!

@karenjanicki Yes, the shoes lasted all season, some were even replanted the next year. The rubbers held up the best!! One of the maintenance guys put something like eyelets in the rubbers and then they hung them. My preference was the colorful rubbers!!
It really was a great idea, some residents didn't go out much, but after they planted their plants, they were out checking almost daily! I wish I had had my camera the day a bird landed on a planted rubber hanging--- residents couldn't quit talking about it!

@Denise Grant yes, they should. After such a success with the shoes, they did build a raised bed (waist high) and planted tomatoes. Everybody loved working, watering, and especially eating (when they all got slices at lunch)!

I think I'll try a canvas purse i just got at a yard sale yesterday.
Bless all of your hanging baskets- I pray they grow beautiful and you feel the nearness of your Creator when you look at them. Bless you all!

What a lovely way to cheer up assisted living facilities! That's pure genius.

I kind of inherited some wooden chairs with rattan bottoms which were torn and in CA no one seems to buy anything not in perfect condition. So I cut out the rattan and painted them with boat lacquer and put pots in them.

@Lisa K I have seen that done and it makes a great garden art piece
