Using Garlic scapes
I never used garlic scapes until a few years ago. Now I look forward to their harvest season. In my area, that is now.
If you haven't tried them here is a link for uses.

Gee, how did you know I just got garlic scapes in my CSA bundle and don't know what to do with them?
-
I made garlic scape relish a few years ago.
-
I love them pickled. And I put them in everything, so good!
-
@Monek Marie Last year I grew garlic in a larger amount for the first time. It was suggested to me, that when the scapes appear, they need to be removed so your garlic ends up bigger and better. I then did some research on what to do with the scapes and discovered I can use them for anything in place of garlic, very handy indeed and less wasteful.

@Monek Marie again something new to learn. Thank you very much for sharing. I never ever user them. I leave many to blossom and then spręsdami seeds, būt now I have so many in my garden, that I can try some of the recipes or, like @JodieDownUnder instead of garlic.
i add garlic leaves to salad.

I'm not sure I've ever had them but maybe I'll need to give them a try :).

Yum! I love garlic, so more ways to prepare it is a bonus.

Here's another link about what to do with garlic scapes.
Plus a link from inside the above link
Will definitely mix up a batch of this.

Or, what I do when I am too busy with other garden things: let them grow out and flower and seed the bulbules in the fall. FIrst year they don't get big; second year they make a full-sized garlic if you transplant them to give them enough space.
-
@Annie Kate this is what I do whether busy, or lazy, that is another matter 😊
-
@RustBeltCowgirl thanks for sharing the pickling guide, much appreciated.

I clip off my hardneck garlic scapes, chop them very small, and add them to stir fries or scrambled eggs.
But I am moving toward more Red Inchelium softbeck and less hardneck, so I don't have as many scapes as I used to.
Don't wait too long to cut them off the plant, or your cloves will be small.

Thank you all for sharing your ways and the website for using garlic scapes. This will be my first time planting garlic. In my state hardnecks are recommended over softneck. I know there are folks here who sell scapes when they are ready. I have only ever tried making pesto with them. And only bought enough to do the one time. Looking forward to having my own, We love garlic and use a lot of it. Will be nice to not have to use the store bought and use my fresh grown.
-
I actually have been snipping up the scapes and adding them to my jar of minced garlic.
-
@vickeym One of the nice things about garlic is that it is so easy to quickly become self-sufficient.
Once you have a variety of garlic that does well in your yard and has a taste you like, you'll never need to buy seed garlic again.
-
What you know.....Ashley from Practical Self Reliance has this up on her site.

Waste not, want not. There are probably many parts of plants we grow and could use, but don't. Claytonia flowers, dandelion leaves, garlic scapes, onion green stems, spruce needles for tea, mustard leaves, sweet potato leaves, and so on.

I just chopped up 5 garlic scapes over the top of a pizza before I baked it. The aroma was heavenly and the taste...just amazing! This is the first time I tried that, but certainly not the last.
