Ferns help keeping feet light during long trails
the weather is nice and together with our friends we went on a long hike up a mountain. After 4-5 hours one starts feeling the heaviness of the feet and then I remembered Father Johannes Künzle’s advice to put ferns into the shoes. I did, my friend as well. Believe it or not, call it placebo or not, but the feet got immediately lighter. This is for the first time, that I tried out this advice and it worked. I have already tried out many other advices. They are in the book which we wrote together with @judsoncarroll4 “The medicinal herbs of Father Johannes Künzle“.

Always good to have first hand experience passed on.
-
@jowitt.europe does it matter what type of ferns, or whatever one can find?
-
I wonder how it works? Do they annoy your legs?
-
@jowitt.europe If you are wearing socks, wouldn't you put it inside those?
-
@JodieDownUnder I put in the ones that were growing by the path. I looked for the softer leaves.
@LaurieLovesLearning No I did not put them in the socks. Just in the shoes.
i have also read that one can put ferns in the pockets of the trousers and that takes tiredness off legs. I will try out during my next hike.

@karenjanicki well, the first feeling that it is much softer in the shoes. It worked like a shock absorber. There was no unpleasant feeling. May be some warmth.

That sound very intriguing. Will have to try it next time I get out hiking. I know my feet get so tired later in the day. Wonder it is kind of like earthing. Or if it is mainly an herbal affect. I have heard of fern being great for the hair. Would have been nice to do back in the day when I was doing marathons.

@marjstratton mugwort is another plant used here in the Alps. It even has a German name leading to this use Beifuß. One can try putting mugwort leaves into shoes. I will try it next time I hike and find it on the way.
-
I will tell my daughter. She easily gets tired feet. Thank you!
-
@jowitt.europe That is cool. And thank you for teaching me a new German word!
-
That is so awesome! I wear magnetic insoles which tend to make my feet hot after a while. I'll try this on my next hike!
-
@jowitt.europe Now this is something worth trying!! I may hike until my feet are tired, then place the ferns in my shoes and see what happens!

Ferns are really amazing. I have just recently begin testing them as Jolanta said, and so far I am surprised. The use of ferns in herbal medicine is remarkable as well... I'm writing a book on that. According to Saint Hildegard, they protect folks from evils spirits and the works of the devil! That sure makes me glad to live in a fern grove, a temperate rain forest, surrounded by thousands of ferns. I'm learning to identify and propagate them. Another interesting fact is that ferns were the main ornamental plant used by the Victorian English - basically, the first house plant and the most collected and sought after of plants. Much of our indoor plant growing knowledge comes from their growing of ferns. I plan to try a mattress pillow top, stuffed with dried ferns some day, just to see if it really does repel all biting insects and ease all muscle, joint and nerve pain.

@water2world let me know when you try how you feel about it!
-
@judsoncarroll4 I am very much interested in the results of your experiments. Keep posting!
-
Cool! Maybe I'll have to give that a try sometime.
