Strange Noise in the Garden

I took a video of a noise in the garden, but I can't post it here. It sounds a little bit like a frog croaking, but I can't find a frog anywhere. It sounds like it's coming from under the ground. It croaks in the morning and at dusk. Any ideas what it might be?

Would you mind telling us where you live? That would help with our detective work.

(I had recently researched a strange noise myself -- scared me awake at midnight while I was on the third floor of my cabin -- the noise sounded like it was in the room with me, but I concluded it was coming through the double open screened door that has no flat surface outside. If I had been more awake, I could have run down a floor and onto the deck so I could have looked up to see what it was. My research concluded it was either a raccoon or barn owl that was making the strange noises so high up.)

Why can't you post it here? How can I help get us some sound?!

Could it be a toad? I've seen them dig into the ground.

@naomi.kohlmeier I'd be really interested in hearing the sound myself. While we've been working out at our new property I'm surprised by all the unfamiliar sounds I'm hearing.

So I'd love to know exactly what you are hearing because it might be some of the same sounds.

I know there are a pair of owls, at least, that talk to each other from across the river. And it is so fascinating to listen to one call and hear another, clearly in a different area upstream, reply.😊

I live in the midwest @silvertipgrizz Whatever it is, it has been happily croaking away for weeks.

Could it be a species of frog either many of us aren't familiar with, or new to the area due to weather changes? (if there have been weather changes in your area)...

Yes, absolutely there have been weather changes in our area. Everything seems to be about a month ahead.

I had some barn owls that decided to live in our carport a couple of years ago. The babies make some pretty horrendous vocalizations and keep it up all night long. Love them and I'm glad to have gotten to know them better, but they are very noisy neighbors.

Even with the weather having become distinctly fall like here and getting quite a bit of rain, I haven't hear any frogs around here for months.

I have a short story about frogs. I only wish that I could have witnessed it. A video would have even been great!

We met a young mom a few days ago while getting water at the spring. She said that they saw a blob of something just riding the water down the eavestrough one day. The eavestrough is I'm place to facilitate getting water into pails & bottles.

Well, her kids went over to investigate & discovered that the huge blob was a leopard frog!

We could just imagine how funny that would be with this frog having its own usually private waterslide, zipping down, then hopping up to the small pool, then sliding down again.

What a wonderful, unexpected story from a beautiful mom. We exchanged info and will be keeping in touch. 🙂 She already knew about TGN too...cool, isn't it?
