New home for a muscovy duck?
I'm looking for a new forever home for my muscovy girl. She's about six months old and attacking one of my hens and my goose. She's getting aggressive on and off towards all the girls and finally had to go into permanent solitary confinement last night. Obviously this isn't a tenable situation so she needs to find a new home. She is NOT for eating!! I've contacted a couple of shelters that take birds and farm animals and thought I'd try advertising her here. too. I'll throw in a nice donation for her lifetime care. I'm in SW Idaho, so driving distance would be best, but I guess I could ship if necessary. She needs to be re-homed ASAP. I'm really, really sad and disappointed that this has to happen and nowhere did I read that Muscovies were like this although maybe she's just unusual? I don't know because I haven't found much info about their disposition around other birds. Anyone interested? Please contact me ASAP. THANKS!!

@Suburban Pioneer It is unusual behavior, but sometimes birds just don't play nice or get along with others. I do hope that you find a suitable home for her.

Turns out "her" was a "him". (Or, very VERY lesbian, but probably not that). Anyway, he's living fairly comfortably in the 5 x 10 outdoor pen for young chicks, now. I let him out for exercise by himself for a little while each day, but all eh wants to do is hang around the main aviary and try to get at the goose. They were accidentally out at the same time one day and he chased her across the pasture and jumped her before I could beat him off of her with a broom. He need a mate of his own and probably to be in a flock of other muscovys. None of the places I contacted ever got back to me, but the 4-H group said they would advertise him in their newsletter and try to locate a kid who would like him as a backyard project and pet. Hope that works because pickings are slim!

I hope you can find someone to take him. Poor grumpy guy :). I would love him but I don't have the setup for ducks.

@Suburban Pioneer A muscovy drake would not be a good choice for a pet, especially for a child. During breeding season they can be very aggressive and actually can be very unsafe, especially if they have imprinted on people.
When we had muscovies, a straw broom was our kids' best friend. The drakes never challenged a good broom.

@Suburban Pioneer I will ask my friend if they would be interested in him. They have other ducks so they might be. You would have to ship him though since they live in Virginia.

I asked my friend and he said that he already has 3 too many drakes.

Thank you for thinking of him anyway!

Exactly what I've found out. He now knows to respect the broom. When he was younger, our gander had to find that out the hard way, too. The first broom I used on him was the one I hung in the barn to chase the cobwebs off the walls and rafters. The bottom hung within reach of his beak and over time it got chewed down quite a bit, LOL! I still keep it in its place because it makes me smile.

Three too many - yes, I can understand her sentiment! But a huge THANK YOU for asking! I would ship him wherever (with whatever safety measures were necessary, of course) if someone could give him a good forever home.

How is he?

He's living by himself in the 8x10 outdoor pen I use to transition the spring chicks to outdoor living. So far, so good. I try to let him out for some exercise every morning and evening while I clean and re-supply his pen, but before the other birds are let out or after they're put away. I sprinkle mealworms by the door of his pen so they come up close and he can at least talk with them through the fencing. It's not ideal, but he seems to have gotten used to it. When he comes out in the morning, he usually waddles right down to the aviary and makes his wishes known to the goose. She and the gander usually squack, fuss around and eventually hide inside the attached barn, but I've noticed that sometimes the goose will walk up and stand outside his door and just look in at him. I've gotten two potential leads on nearby new homes, but nothing definite so far. I keep asking around in hopes that I'll make the right connection soon!
