Grow your own rice

Here is a rice growing video for everyone. I might try this at some point just for fun.

That is a pretty cool video. I've never looked into the process of growing rice before, other than knowing it is grown in water.
I wonder if the growing season would be long enough in the Lower Mainland to grow rice. I'm thinking of the flooded land in Abbotsford right now. While this year is exceptional for floods, they are not uncommon in that area. We need to work with Mother Nature instead of trying to defy her at every turn.

@torey That would be turning lemons into lemonade for sure! I bet the season would be long enough.
I would like to try sprouting that mix of rice that we get from the store, as soon as we buy it, & see what happens.
-
Apparently this is a good idea. Its already being done!
I will have to see if I can find some of this rice, next time I am down that way.
-
I plan on doing this when I get moved - rice cultivation began in North AMerica in South Carolina. The Caolina Gold rice is very flavorful and heirloom seeds are available.
-
Wow. That would never have occurred to me.
Remember that "wild rice" grows in cool climates like the Great Lakes, and might be easier than "real" rice for temperate climate gardeners.
-
Yes! Do that! I don't know how good it would be by the time it got here, but I would be interested in 30 grains or so to try here.
@VermontCathy Wild rice is not technically a rice & they say that it needs deep, clean water. I think that it also needs to be moving somewhat. I forgot what I had read. There are aboriginal wild rice "farms" north and northeast of us. I would have to drive probably 4+ hours to be in those areas.

@LaurieLovesLearning that was very interesting. I have never thought of someone growing their own rice. It was amazing and I enjoyed watching the video. Thanks for sharing it!

@dipat3005 What I was most surprised about was that they used store bought rice! That must have been fresh rice because it loses its ability to germinate fairly quickly.
-
Very interesting. I have never thought of growing rice either. @LaurieLovesLearning if you try it let us know how it goes. I would never remember to keep it moist enough!
