One thing to remember about spectacular aurora colors caught on camera, is that the camera will often pick up on colors that we can't see with the naked eye. We may see some, but they do reveal even more.
Some of these pictures were taken in the same time window in which we saw the rolling lights (I still wish I had a video of that to share). Some of the pictures in the link were also in locations that indicate that we should have seen those same colors. After seeing those pictures, I am positive that we could have "seen" more colors had we had a better camera.
