And just like that...we've got snow.

We now have more snow in one snowfall than we had all of last year. I know others have had more than us already, but we tend to miss most of the moisture (in any season) due to our location from the valley. It is heavy snow too. This promises a good start to spring, even if for some strange reason we don't get any more January through April.

I wanted to get pictures of the snow on the mugo pine because that's always beautiful, but the kids had fun this morning and had already shaken all of that snow off. The bird pens held lots too, but we needed to clear them of all that extra weight before it caused issues.

@LaurieLovesLearning you are correct for we too have snow. It was a welcome surprise yesterday and it snowed part of the day. It also rained a bit but did nothing to the snow except make it a bit icy this morning. More snow added in the wee hours of the morning. Thanks for the pictures!

Between yesterday and today 3 inches.

I love a first snow. Its so clean and undisturbed. It add beauty and mystery to nature. And yes, those heavy snows can create issues.

    Enjoy it!!! And its benefits.

WE have only had one real snow and a few dustings. I don;t miss ther issues a real snow or harsh wiondet creates but I worry about water tables and Insect issues that come with a mild winter. And this frost and thaw is very hard on trees, shrubs and plants. But winter is young and we may get blasted yet.

@Monek Marie It isn't our first snow. We did already have some, but it is at least worthy of being considered a decent snowfall. Everyone has to lift their feet/hooves a bit higher, it is a lot to shovel, and when it's done, it makes higher piles.

The highways look pretty nasty and we've heard of one accident on a major route already, but that's also people not thinking and in a hurry.

We typically would have had 2 or 3 heavy snow falls by this time of year. When we went to bed last night we had none and it was predicted that there would be at least 2 inches on the ground when we woke up. All we had was a dusting again and it is all but melted now. I'm not a fan of snow but I wish it would come. Like @Monek Marie said it is hard on the plant life. It got so warm over the weekend that my garlic sprouted.

I consider a first snow, any snow that is clean and comes after a melt. It has that fresh look.

It used to be, snow came in November and left in March, April or May - depending on how brutal our winter was. And January thaw (everyone looked forward to this) was where you could catch a glimpse of green grass in a vehicle rut.

Now we have green grass most of the winter. Being just below the Snow belt line created by lakes our winters have become more mild or unpredictable. I remember too many winters when I was young where the backhoes and bulldozers had to clean out roads so that we could get out. And snowmobile season was 6 months long. Sometimes a snowmobile would be out only way off the hill.

@Michelle D Good luck with your garlic. Another really mild month and I will be looking for issues like this.

@LaurieLovesLearning I envy you. We could have much more in our garden. As you rightly say, it is a good start in spring. We usually have very little rain in spring, but it has never been a problem, because the soil holds so much humidity from melting snow. This year we have too little snow, but, hopefully, it will snow.

We got snow in the couple of weeks before Christmas. Some of it came in small amounts but the bulk of it came in two separate snowfalls; one of at least 10 inches and the next was well over a foot. So we have a fair bit of accumulation. Much more than we have had in the past few years by this point in the winter. Shovelling was a steady activity for a few days. Good insulation cause it has now dropped into the -30's (C). I hope we get more, though, to help with the drought conditions that have been affecting quite a bit of BC (the whole west coast of NA, actually).

Even the normally balmy south coast is getting winter. They have snow on the ground and the temp has dropped well below freezing. -20 with the wind chill. Very, very cold for them.

I hope you will get snow. It is still early enough that you could still get a bunch.

We have had too many drought years lately that this is certainly welcome. Hopefully it is a sign of change to come. I can't imagine what another year of dry weather would be like.

@torey We've got cold warnings and it is here to stay for some time now. They say more snow is coming, do I guess what you got us being shared over our way too.

Here is some of what we are to expect, with wind chill bringing it down to the -40s.

When my husband went for a drive today, he said a lot of places had large drifts and a few people did dangerous snow clearing for no apparent reason but to push snow, even so much as to do a bit of a couple highways (illegally) with a small blade. In one instance, a pile was left on one lane when the guy couldn't get through. That is dangerous!

I wish that I could leave the snow pack for insulation on the pens, but we have had one collapse in the past & we came close to losing a few guineas over that. Luckily after a few days, we were able to capture even the most stupid of them. There is a lot in flat topped pens, so they will do well. It's just the tarped ones that we have to watch. They have lots piled up surrounding them (on the walls, and the pens are packed with birds, so that will help.

That's really cold for them. I wonder how all of the fruit crops will fare...if much was even left after all the heat, etc.

@LaurieLovesLearning We got snow Christmas morning. It was just late enough that we supposedly don't qualify as having a white Christmas (has to be 1" accumulation by 9am)! However, it is still here, about 8 inches worth and temperatures are really cold for us. This morning, (the 27th), we were down to 8F, so our snow will probably be around for a few more days. Don't think it has ever been that cold around here since we have been in this area. My son is coming up to visit us from southern California. Is he in for a shock!

@marjstratton I didn't know there was criteria for that! I think any snow on the day counts (that's my Canadian perspective anyway).

@LaurieLovesLearning that is cold!!! Take care. For a change, they predicted +17C for Austria and we might have +10C in the Alps during the New Year’s Eve. This is really odd. I just hope that nature does not take it for spring.

Alaska has been setting new record highs for the month of December. This includes the warmest day ever recorded anywhere in Alaska in December, 19.4C, 67F, on Dec. 26th. One community had the warmest Christmas day ever recorded in Alaska.

We are -32C this morning. So not quite as nippy as you, Laurie.

We had a bit of snow yesterday but it was mostly that fine powder that falls at such low temps, so it didn't amount to much. But it is supposed to warm up a wee bit as we are forecast for 10-15 cm (4-6") of snow for later this afternoon and through the night.

BC's south coast continues to experience temps well below normal and they are to get more snow later today as well.

    Snow ice-cream anyone?!

In our area many are smart and staying home. It has snowed every day since Christmas and it has ended up being a lot of ice on top of snow and we have been encouraged not to drive.

    Typical north country unpredictable weather!

We were late getting snow this year. Usually it's already on the ground at Thanksgiving. But this year it held off until December.

We only have a few inches on the ground right now, but come January that will increase to a foot or more.

We've had such an odd year here. It snows overnight than melts in the day. Everything is muddy. Snow isn't really sticking around. Usually we get tons of it. But not this year.

@LaurieLovesLearning I had no idea that there was that criteria either, but it was something my husband just saw it on a video on Weather Underground.
