When I was a kid my dad subscribed to magazines like True West and Real West. I recall an article about them as a cure for rabies. That's the only help I can be.

Fascinating stuff. Seems like I vaguely remember coming across a reference or two in `19th-century diaries to madstones. but can't locate them now. However, once something like this comes up, it has a way of popping up again and again....Just saw this article today in a Homestead email--madstones and various other unsavory folk remedies....I think I'll stick with herbs!
