Blizzard Warning
These are the roads, into Saskatchewan, just to the west of the Manitoba border already tonight. Red is closed, white is ice covered. That's a lot of red! This will reach here sometime tonight & into tomorrow.
Up here, they call this an Alberta Clipper, which is a fast moving storm system from the west, with lots of heavy snow & high winds, causing whiteout conditions. This storm was in AB this morning causing havoc.
We've already had freezing rain today ahead of the rest to come. Our last Clipper brought a lot of snow and wasn't all that long ago.
I'm excited. Everything should be ready and we aren't needing to be anywhere.
😁 I love these things when we are prepared. It's the deep cold I don’t care for as much...but just the same, that can be worked around.
Winter should certainly be in the dictionary. Haha

We have a ton of "clippers" come through here. Right over the Great Lakes which bring a lot of lake effect snow with them when they pick up the extra moisture from open water. Right now, we're seeing a pattern of "clipper, 2 clear days, another clipper"

@RustBeltCowgirl That's how it's been here lately. So interesting. They don't "blame" your clippers on any particular place by putting it in the name?
I wonder if our clippers & yours are connected. Let me know if it appears to follow through to your area, although looking at a map, I could see the Great Lakes easily making their own system. I think that would be interesting to know.

Wow, that certainly is a lot of red! Not going to be too much movement of anything in Saskatchewan today.
We've had some wet snow and now back down to -20C tonight. Just the one night, though.

Wow, yours is currently worse than ours. We had high winds around New Years. Truck drivers were not running as they were having several trucks blown over when returning empty. Folks towing trailers, boats and such were getting blown off the roads.
Then we had the freezing rains, turning everything to ice. Back to the double digit negatives we had most of the winter, then warmed up to mid thirties and up for a week or so, more melting and wet on top of the ice. Snowed a little then back to single digit negative lows right now though there is snow in the forecast again.
Glad you are prepared and not having to go out. Prayers for all affected.

We have a system coming through tonight that they are calling an Alberta Clipper. I always wondered why "Alberta" since most of our moisture comes from the Great Lakes also. It is sunny and beautiful right now. We are expecting freezing rain to start this evening, turning into snow that is projected to last for two days. They have already closed the schools and are asking people to plan to stay off the roads if possible. I have no need to go out during it all so I made plans to use the time to make freezer meals and getting a lot of baking done.

@LaurieLovesLearning Yes, it is called an Alberta Clipper here also. Here is why it is supposedly called that.
I'm in the area where they are projecting 9 - 14 inches of snow.

@Michelle D There was a large area that lost power. We're fine. Just be prepared for that possibility, but these days do make for good baking days otherwise.
It is still windy here, but the clouds & moisture have moved through. It was a really fast one. It blew in loudly at around 11pm last night.
All school divisions didn't run their busses today. There are roads closed (TransCanada from border to border in MB), but not as many at this point as there were in SK. There is a large area without power on the mid-south area of the province. Other than that, we have yet to see if any snow caught anywhere. At least with the wind direction, our yard was fairly sheltered.

@LaurieLovesLearning & anyone else affected by the Alberta Clippers, take care & try not to drive anywhere. Down under in my area, its humid, humid, rain, rain & over 30 degrees C. Only got to think about doing something & you perspire, profusely!

@JodieDownUnder It's clear now & going to -40 tonight and then again Thursday night. Otherwise it will be around -30°C.
When it is very cold, the ice tends to get brittle on more traveled highways and once that's gone, they are clear & dry. That, and intersections & bridges get "salted" with a mix of sand and salt. In some places, beet juice is becoming more popular, but is still very expensive. The plows will also be out.
Unless the snow is unprecedented, it doesn't take long and the roads are passable.
That being said, our major highways are still closed at this time and many others still have ice.

It's currently 45F at 4:05am here in Ohio. We are supposed to get rain around noon, changing to possible freezing rain. the snow is supposed to hit during the night. I won't be going anywhere on Thursday if we get as much snow as they say. My van does not have much ground clearance and the Ranger is such a lightweight.

MN had some medium to high winds in the a.m. hours, and to increase wind intensity around 9pm on 2-1

Here in Michigan it rained all night. There is lots of standing water places because the ground is frozen. They predicted that there would be several inches of snow by sunrise today. The rain is just now turning to snow. I'm wondering if we won't get as much as they expected all together or if it is just late.
@RustBeltCowgirl with how close you are to us I'm surprised you didn't have rain sooner. The radar showed it all heading that way.

We were having a balmy spell with temps around or slightly above freezing. I was able to get out walking for several days.
Big change. Temperature started dropping mid-day yesterday with a nasty wind. This morning its -18C and snowing heavily; supposed to snow all day. Visibility will be terrible on the roads, likely turning to whiteout conditions.
But, tomorrow the high is supposed to be back up to near freezing, then a week of daily highs all above freezing.
Its a strange winter.
A comment on that beet juice product they are using instead of salt. Its CRAP! Just makes a horrible sludge on the roads that doesn't melt away like salt. It doesn't have the traction of sand. IMO it makes things worse than if they had done nothing. And what a mess it makes of your vehicle. You go through way more windshield washer fluid.

@torey I have had no experience with the beet juice. I've just heard the praise end. Thanks for telling the other side. Now I hope I don't get to experience it. Driving through slush is bad enough, but sludge & getting it on your windshield sounds nasty.

As I thought, the roads are gruesome. I had to go out for a first aid call and it's a whiteout. We had about 6 inches when I left and we have about 8 now. Still snowing heavily.
So now I am off to shovel. The temp is on the rise and the snow will only get heavier, so the more I can get off now before it gets warmer, the easier it will be.

It started to drizzle here about 9am. Rained steadily after that. Temps are still high 30's (it's 7pm now). Glad that I don't have to go out tomorrow. I probably would have called off anyway.

I am also in the atlantic clipper storm. I made sure I had any supplies yesterday and comfort food. Batteries, stored water and flashlights are at hand. Last night they called for freezing rain at about 3 am. We missed most of that. And in about 2 hours we will start ther 1/2 inch an hour mode of the storm - if they are right. The storm has already been a bit milder than first predicted (at least 15 inches of snow and sleet and rain first) so I am hoping the snow level will be less.
But we are already snowed in from last weeks snow storm. I will call the local fire department if we need to get out for some reason.

@Monek Marie I am glad that you ate prepared.
Our storm passed through, but the ice stayed. We had more freezing rain than I thought.
My husband had to get into the vehicle from the other side because drivers door was iced shut. An ice scraper didn't work on the windshield. It took 20 minutes to thaw it off.
I heard that the highways into the city were all a black ice. The TransCanada's main lane was okay, but the passing lane was still pretty icy.
Warmth & comfort food are always nice. If we always had summer, I don't think we'd appreciate it in the same way.

We got about a foot yesterday and it is snowing again now. I wonder if it is warmer above us as it is almost like sleet but it is well below freezing here on the ground. Supposed to snow for the rest of the day. I'm taking a break and then will go back out to tunnel my way to the greenhouse to get the snow off so it doesn't collapse.
Roads here are a mess.

Well, so far we are at 6 to 9 inches of snow and still coming down. The Vermilion River has an ice jam built up from the thaw earlier. Which means as soon as upstream starts thawing again, the low areas are going to flood.

Just heard that we are at a Level 3, which should mean that only essential personnel should be on the roads. Like that is going to happen. There is always someone who thinks it doesn't apply to them.
I'm safe and warm at home. Working on projects.

@RustBeltCowgirl Our snow is predicted to stop soon so since I am east of you, are you about done with the storm?
I have not ventured out yet today so I don't know out snowfall amount but its not as bad here as they predicted. And very little to no freezing rain. Just south of us they had heave ice and are out of power.
@torey How is your snow accumulation? I always worry about roofs and such when the snow get so heavy.

@Monek Marie Well, we are dug out after the foot that we got on Wednesday. Got all the snow off where collapses were possible. Only got a couple of inches more yesterday but still more in the forecast for today. But it has warmed up enough that it might actually rain. Yuck!
The totals were just released for this winter to January 31 and we have 151 cm since November which is 5 feet. So with February's start, we are over 6 feet now for this winter. It shrank a bit in the rain we had a couple of weeks ago but the new snowfall made up for that.
We have to shovel over our heads now when clearing pathways.

@torey We are hearing that more snow is on its way for a few more days.
I really wonder what summer will be like with the return of a lot moisture now. Will it be the same come spring & summer?
It will be interesting to see if it continues. I suspect that it will also trigger the return of our large summer storms as well.

@Monek Marie We are finally at a point where the "conveyor belt" from TX turned off. That's what a local weather person was calling it. All of that Gulf moisture meeting up with the Canadian cold air. Just getting little sprinkles of "fairy dust" snow now. It's sitting at 1F right now. We did get the predicted amount of snow. We were in the 9 to 14 inch area.
Not looking forward to the thaw. Water will be everywhere.

The statistics just came out. My hometown got 13.3 inches of snow for the period between 2/2 and 2/4. I was in the area being projected to get 9 - 14 inches.

We were just comparing snow pictures last to this year. What a world of difference. It's amazing.
I just hope my going to be flooded garden drains in time to get it ready & plant!

They are projecting another clipper coming through tonight. Not supposed to bring much snow, but the temps will plummet.
