Alternatives to Rock Salt

Not sure which category this belongs in. But since winter is probably not done with us yet, this article seems a useful round-up of better solutions for icy sidewalks and driveways than rock salt.

Gotta say, #7 only works in milder climates. I have seen hot water thrown into the air and freeze on contact with the air. At lower temps the hot water is only going to ice up.

I am fortunate enough to have wood ashes for my driveway. Not so good for walkways cause you might track it in the house. When its really icy and there isn't enough ash, we go to the local gravel pit. But not everyone is able to use either of those.

Kitty litter is awesome. I have a bag in the car, just in case I get stuck.

I do like the suggestion of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle for windshields.
