Using a Compass to Navigate
This is an outdoor skill that I still have trouble with. I need to break out a local map and my compass and go on a wander!

I like reading paper maps.

I have never used a compass even though I have one. I'd have to print this explanation out and take it outside with my compass and a map which I don't even know where to get these days to try and figure out how to use it.
You know my GPS always starts directions with head south or west etc. I never have any idea what that means! 😁

@kbmbillups1 it's such a struggle for me. But just learning how to find north is a big start.

I use my compass for surveying.
The learning curve was rough and I leaned a few new 4 lettered words to help me through it.

When my husband was in the army he was the best in his platoon at land navigation. But he can't find his way out of a paper bag without a map and compass. I haven't used a compass in so long I really should practice more.

I am usually really good at naturally knowing directions, but would like to learn how to use a compass should I get turned around and really need help. We need a good one. @Mary Linda Bittle, West Plains, Missouri & @Michelle D do you have any recommendations?
Certain cities (Winnipeg makes no sense) & mountains are too much for me, but that's where printed maps come in, I suppose.
@csinclair461 I love reading paper maps! I've gone on many trips this way, exploring all sorts of great places as I go. I even get that satisfied feeling of having traveled when I'm done. 😀

@LaurieLovesLearning I like the ones with the clear base plate. Easier to work with maps. I think mine was about 12.00 US.
