For my Canadian Friends: Hot Hamburger Plate

I have to admit, this looks GOOOOOOOD.... exactly the kind of meal I would want between 11 pm and 3 am back when I was on the road a lot.

You don't have hot hamburger sandwiches in the States? Its on all diner menus here. Even some higher end restaurants. Quite often with two patties and extra fried onions and mushrooms as toppers. But on toasted bread, not fresh. Usually with fries and a side of slaw but sometimes mashed potatoes and veggies.

For us, the hamburger is a sandwich, on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard, ketchup (etc). The patty with gravy and potatoes is called salisbury steak - named after a doctor who tried to convince people that ground beef and gravy was the one and only thing they should eat, 3 meals a day, with coffee!
-
I've never had one, but my husband is familiar with it. He said it was very common at roadside restaurants here a long time ago, but the one I worked at so long ago never had it on the menu when I worked there.
I still haven't seen one on a menu. 🤷♀️ Maybe I was always looking for something else.
Do you guys have a hot beef sandwich? I never saw or ate one when I was in the US, but maybe I just didn't go to the right restaurants to see these.

In what form is the beef, like sliced roast beef or a patty, or loose, ground meat?
-
@judsoncarroll4 Sliced roast beef with one or two slices of bread (so open faced or regular), and gravy inside on top of the meat & on top of the sandwich as well.
-
We have hot turkey sandwiches, too. Just like the hot beef, sliced turkey on two pieces of toast with gravy on top.
I've worked in diners that had all three on the menu. Hot hamburger, hot beef and hot turkey sandwiches.
There is another similar, popular, diner dish called a patty melt. Two burger patties, topped with cheddar cheese served open faced on rye toast.
-
@torey...a patty melt. We served those too. I am so hungry right now, and this sounds so good.
Rye toast...mmmm.
-
I'd say it is pretty rare these days. Back when we had more legit diners and cafeterias, roast beef with bread or potatoes, with gravy was more common. It is something I still make a lot, and enjoy, especially, on rye bread.

The hot turkey sandwich is most popular in Kentucky, where it is called a "hot brown". That is roast turkey with bacon and cheese, served open faced, with gravy. THat is another one I make at home a lot.
A patty melt is an all time favorite of mine. Here, it is usually served on sourdough bread, with Swiss cheese, mayo and onions. The bread is buttered and it is browned on both sides. I like to add some kraut and mustard.

I am so hungry. I have leftovers today, and they are good, but my cravings are still for the patty melt. I have meat, but nothing else on hand for one right now. Oh boy.
-
I have the patties simmering in the mushroom and onion gravy right now - will serve with mashed potatoes!
-
My intense craving is past. I had my leftovers and now feel much better. I think I had "hangry" happening. The patty melt still sounds tasty, but I'm no longer so Irritable & focused on having only that. 😆
Enjoy your meal!

@LaurieLovesLearning The beef sandwich I am used to is served on a single slice of bread, slices of beef and gravy. Called an open faced sandwich.
The patty melt I am used to is usually a single patty served on your choice of bread with Swiss cheese. I have had it served on untoasted or toasted. Have had it both ways, don't like the untoasted. Ends up a soggy, doughy tasting mess.

This is making me miss all of the good comfy foods of back home. I remember having hot beef or Turkey sandwiches. The turkey was popular around November due to all of the turkey being on sale then for the holiday. It is probably one of the reasons I still love mashed potatoes and gravy. I gave up bread a few years ago, and am not trying to eliminate all wheat flours.
-
I used to love a good patty melt. I have never heard of a hot hamburger sandwich served that way.
-
OK, I'm ready for anything hot and served to me! Ya'll are making me hungry!!
-
I have never seen this before. I do love a good hamburger with honey mustard though lol.
