My whittling so far

Here are my first 3 projects - a butter knife, a pickle fork and a jam spreader. I suppose a spoon will be next. There are all carved out of bartlett pear, with a Swiss Army knife. I don't plan to carve anything else out of bartlett pear - it is very knotty, and the grain isn't great. But, it is very hard, so these should last.

Those look great. How much time went into creating the pieces? @judsoncarroll4
-
Thanks! I'd estimate about an hour and a half. A better type of wood for carving would have taken an hour or less.
-
What type of wood will you try next?
-
Those are great! I have wanted to learn to do this for a long time. Even bought a cheap set of carving tools to encourage myself but hadn't made time yet. Now I have some time at home but one handed so I still can't do it. lol
Our wood here is birch, cottonwood and spruce mainly. Don't want to buy wood, at least not till I learn some and get where I can do a decent job of it.
-
Probably tulip poplar but I have a lot of big holly trees that need pruning, too.
-
Birch is a really good wood for carving. You can use a clamp to hold it to a table or bench.
-
@judsoncarroll4 Great idea. Thank you.
-
Also, check out "chip carving" - that is often done with flat pieces of wood, essentially one-handed
-
@judsoncarroll4 I have also been looking into that. I would love to do spoons. And especially useful thing like the set you have made here.
-
@judsoncarroll4 I'm particularly fond of animal carvings, so I will wait patiently until your skill evolves to that point.
-
I just made a couple of owls....
-
@judsoncarroll4 pictures of the owls?
-
I want to finish 1-2 more so I can show a little family of owls made from the odd ends of limbs used for other projects.
-
Ok will wait patiently also.
-
Here is this week's whittling - 4 owls (that look a bit like goblins) and two songbirds
-
@judsoncarroll4 very nice!
-
@@judsoncarroll4 You have been busy! Love the "wood-ware"! And those owls are precious! They and the birds remind me of the carvings on the blocks of the Native American Flutes! Great job!
We have birch, so I might have a reason to try to carve!
-
Thanks! I'm basically just learning a technique or so a week.
-
These look awesome @judsoncarroll4! I wonder what would happen if you whittle with the wooden knife? 🤣
-
very little!
-
@judsoncarroll4 looking good. Can't wait to see your next example.
-
@judsoncarroll4 How did you learn how to whittle? Did you have a teacher, a book, a video, or just sit down and experiment?
What type of sharp knife do you use?
-
I got the Swiss Army Knife Whittling book, and so far I am just using a Swiss Army knife.
-
Cool projects you whittled. When I was a kid, I tried whittling some things from fruit wood my dad had pruned from our fruit trees. I don't believe I every finished a project because the wood was so hard to carve with my little pocketknife.
-
Here is last night's project
-
A rooster... and several cuts on my hand
-
Those are amazing, @judsoncarroll4! Great job!😄
I would love to have a few large wooden spoons to use in the kitchen. I've always loved them and had thought about trying to make my own. However, I had to draw the line on all the things I want to try and leave it up to the professionals. I hope to be able to purchase some when our kitchen renovation gets completed and we visit a local maker's market.🤞
-
@judsoncarroll4 Those are so cute. But let's not be getting cut. I think I have already covered the quota on that for awhile for all of us.
-
Spoons are a project I'll work on soon. I need to buy some special knives to scoop them out.
-
That is for sure!
