Even though I have been studying herbal medicine for many years, it has taken me a while to get to the point where I am using this method. I wish I had learned this at an earlier stage in my studies.
When making up a herbal formula we want to keep this in mind. Does the person have a hot or cold constitution? Susun's article does a good job of simplifying this.
First we make a list of all the possible herbs that could help a specific ailment. Then we eliminate anything that is contraindicated (by meds, other herbs, age or other medical condition). From this smaller list we choose herbs that will balance the hot or cold constitution based on the hot or cold properties of the herb. Some are really easy to figure out, like ginger or cayenne being warming herbs. But there are charts out there to help if you aren't quite sure. This is one from Herbal Bear.
This site has a list of warming and cooling foods.
This is a good one, too.
