Jeff Anderson's article recommended two-way communication. Are there any specific recommendations?

I have a friend who wants to set me up with a ham radio. I know they are two different options and would like to know more myself about the two way communication as well before I invest in either.

I have heard good things about GMRS. I'm still doing my research but I will probably go that route for my family. Travis from The Prepared Homestead did a YouTube video on it awhile back.
